In sporting parlance, Sheetz scored a trifecta Monday night as the Warren Planning Commission unanimously approved a third location in Macomb County’s largest city.

The new Warren location makes a total of 20 Sheetz developments that have been given the green light to build or are already constructing a fuel center in the southeast Michigan region.

The latest Sheetz — to be located in a former Rite-Aid pharmacy at 12 Mile and Dequindre roads — will include a 6,100-square-foot restaurant and convenience store with an outdoor café and 14 fueling spaces, according to a news release.

The issue was before planners during their May meeting, but the commission voted to table a decision until members could review the results of a traffic study for the 12 Mile/Dequindre area.

Although the planning commission’s approval was unanimous, several high profile individuals spoke out in opposition during last month’s meeting.

Those included Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent John Bernia Jr. and Immaculate Conception Catholic School Principal Mary Ann Gruda. Former Mayor Jim Fouts also has registered his opposition on social media.

The Altoona, Pa.-based company has said it plans to open some 50-60 locations in southeast Michigan over the next five to six years with the start of construction on several locations beginning later this year and into 2026.

Later this year, Sheetz will be hiring employees for its future locations, with each store expected to employ approximately 35 people, the majority of which will be full-time.
