SALINAS >> Running back Peyton Hatten had a career outing, and the Cabrillo College football team ran over Hartnell 38-7 in the teams’ Coast Conference game at Rabobank Stadium on Saturday night.

Hatten, a sophomore out of Rancho San Juan High, rushed for a career-best 303 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 34 carries, putting him on pace for a second straight 1,000-yard season with three games remaining. He has 848 rushing yards on 148 carries this season. He ran for 1,092 yards on 201 carries as a freshman.“It’s what we expected,” Seahawks coach Justin Hansen said. “Not that you ever put a stat line to somebody, but we thought he was going to be a big piece of the puzzle for our success, and he was.”

The Seahawks (2-5, 2-2) moved to .500 in conference action with the win. They’ll look to push their win streak to three games when they host Merced (2-5, 2-1) on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.

Hartnell dropped to 1-6, 0-3.

The Seahawks finished with 437 yards on offense, including 396 yards on the ground. Brooks Walker, a freshman running back out of Parker, Colorado, had nine carries for 46 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jamari Vaughns, a Seaside alum who completed 2 of 5 passes for 41 yards, also rushed for a touchdown.

“The boys came out ready to play,” Hansen said. “It was good team balance: special teams, offense, and defense. It was good timing on everything. It was complementary football. That made a lot of stuff easier and kept momentum on our side.”

Hatten scored on a 1-yard run early, and Vaughns made it a 14-0 game in the first quarter with his 8-yard scoring run.

Walker scored on a 7-yard run in the second quarter, and Hatten added another 1-yard plunge to give the Seahawks a 28-0 lead at the half.
