FELTON >> Jordan Renteria had two touchdown receptions on offense and made two takeaways on defense, and the San Lorenzo Valley High football team remained unbeaten with its 41-0 win over Santa Cruz on Saturday.

The senior wide receiver/cornerback, who sat out last season after shining at the junior-varsity level two years ago, scored on receptions of 45 and 55 yards. He also recorded an interception and made a fumble recovery.

“He’s really stepping up, big time,” Cougars coach David Grant said. “He makes big plays for us. He didn’t play last year, but we saw what he could do when he played on JV and we’re happy to have him come back. He’s making a huge difference.”

Senior quarterback Jack Dagan passed for 200-plus yards and three touchdowns, and scored on 10-yard run.

The teams played with a running clock in the fourth quarter.

With the win, SLV (8-0, 4-0) moved into a tie for the Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Division lead with idle Stevenson (5-2, 4-0) of Pebble Beach. The Cougars host the Pirates on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in SLV’s David Maze memorial game. The winner secures no worse than a share of the division title.

“It’s going to be a battle,” Grant said. “We expect a really tough game from Stevenson.”

SLV, which had held opponents to 10 points or less in every game but its season opening win, recorded its first shutout. It was the first time Santa Cruz — held scoreless a year ago — has been blanked this season.

Sophomore running back Justin Griffis rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

It was one of those days were everything seemed to bounce the Cougars’ way, quite literally. Griffis was striped of the ball at Santa Cruz’s 10-yard line and it bounced directly to teammate Kenji Pane, who scored on the fumble recovery.

Senior receiver/defensive back Winston Wells hauled in a 40-yard touchdown reception, and made three other athletic receptions.

Cougars senior defensive lineman Haden Woolworth made nine tackles, four for a loss of yards, including a sack, and blocked a punt on special teams. Sophomore middle linebacker Jacob Hardin made five tackles with a sack, and forced a fumble.

Senior safety Dom Aguilar rushed for 25 yards on two carries, and made seven tackles on defense.

Junior quarterback/defensive back Neven Ristic didn’t play for the Cardinals, one week after leading them to a win over Marina to snap the program’s 19-game losing streak.

The game nearly didn’t happen. Officials didn’t show up after a communication flap. Several area officials were contacted Saturday and some of them showed up on their day off to make the game official.

“I went out of my way to thank the crew,” Grant said.

Santa Cruz (1-8, 1-4) closes its season against host Harbor on Friday at 7 p.m.

SEASIDE — Senior running back Fausto Gonzales tied a school record with five touchdowns in the Pirates’ PCAL Santa Lucia Division loss at Seaside High on Saturday night.

He finished with three rushing touchdowns and two receiving and had more than 200 all-purpose yards for the third time this season.

Gonzales, battling a knee injury, came off the bench. As a sophomore, he missed much of the season with a broken hand, and he served as a reserve as a junior.

“I’m proud of him,” Pirates coach James Gaynor Jr. said. “He put in a lot of work over the summer. He’s had a couple of games where I’m like, ‘Wow, I wish I had him another year.’ He’s the epitome of what a high school football player is. He’s not a three-star, two-star, or four-star player. He didn’t even start for us last year. But he put in the hard work and improved.”

Gonzales shares the record with alums Calvin Keyser-Allen (2000) and Jeovany Linares (2022).

Pirates senior receiver Max Falconer had five catches for 115 yards, and quarterback Luke Griffin passed for 250 yards. Senior defensive lineman Nico Aquino-Chavez had seven tackles, including two for a loss of yards.

Harbor (1-6, 0-4) hosts Santa Cruz (1-8, 1-4) on Friday at 7 p.m.
