PAJARO >> A Pajaro resident intervened in an attack against his neighbor on Thursday, potentially saving her life.

An unnamed 83-year-old woman suffered severe head trauma after reportedly being hit multiple times with a knife sharpener.

Schauntel Marina Gomez, 37, from Milpitas was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse.

The neighbor who reported the incident said he was in his own house when he heard screaming next door. He recognized his neighbor’s voice and went to her residence to investigate. He told police he saw Gomez repeatedly hitting the 83-year-old with a knife sharpener, and was able to pull her off and call 911.

The victim was transported to a local trauma center for severe head injuries and was later listed as being in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Gomez’s bail has been set at $1,030,000.
