SCOTTS VALLEY >> Senior outside hitter Ava Morrison had 14 kills and three aces, and the No. 4 seed Scotts Valley High girls volleyball team beat No. 13 Stevenson 25-18, 19-25, 25-16, 25-18 in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division IV playoffs on Saturday.
“My senior, Ava Morrison, really led our team today,” Falcons coach Mikayla Fish said. “She was everywhere we needed her to be, picking up digs, making plays, and I could not be more proud of her for her leadership and tenacity.”
Junior opposite Aila Papadopoulos had 12 kills for the Falcons, and junior outside hitter Hayden Smith had nine kills and six digs.
No. 13 Stevenson’s season ends at 10-14.
Scotts Valley (19-9) hosts No. 5 Monte Vista Christian (21-9) in Tuesday’s quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

SAN JOSE — The No. 5 Mustangs (21-9) earned a 25-13, 25-20, 25-11 sweep of the host No. 12 Grizzlies (13-8) in the first round of the CCS D-IV playoffs on Saturday.
“All my girls were struggling with being sick, but I’m proud of them for pushing through and getting the ‘W,’ ” Mustangs coach Brittney Long said. “We are grateful every time we get to step on the court and are hopeful for the remaining season.
“Maia Kilinski was a standout for putting the ball down and making a play, and Hailey Gomez had insane sets and serves stacking up points against the opponent.”
MVC (21-9) plays at No. 4 Scotts Valley (19-9) in Tuesday’s quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
Pioneer 3, Aptos 2
APTOS — Sophomore outside hitter Ella Dueck had 18 kills, two aces, and 26 digs, but the No. 5 Mariners were edged by the No. 12 Mustangs 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 22-25, 15-13 in the first round of the CCS D-III playoffs on Saturday.
The Mariners faced adversity several times in the match. They trailed 17-10 in the first set and battled back. They also won the fourth set with the match on the line, and battled while facing deficits of 9-6 and 13-11 in the decisive fifth set.
“While it wasn’t the outcome we were hoping for, to extend our season by making CCS was a great victory for the program,” Mariners coach Hunter Zeng said. “I’m really proud of these student-athletes, many of whom were first year varsity players. They learned a lot, grew together, and I’m honored to have coached them this season.”
Junior right side Kenzie Smith had 15 kills for the Mariners (12-16), and senior middle Claire Willoughby made 12 kills and hit .330. Freshman outside hitter Sienna Fozzati had 10 kills.
Pioneer (21-8) plays at No. 4 Santa Cruz (16-10) in Tuesday’s quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

WATSONVILLE — Senior Kelaiah Wynn had nine kills, and the No. 4 Cardinals pulled off a 25-15, 25-12, 25-13 sweep over the No.13 Grizzlies (17-10) in the first round of the CCS D-III playoffs on Saturday.
Junior Natalie Monroe had six kills for the Cardinals, and freshman Haisley Flanagan had five kills and three aces. Senior Shelby Leonardich served six aces and made 11 digs. Freshman Irie Butler made 12 assists.
Santa Cruz (16-10) hosts No. 12 Pioneer (21-8) in Tuesday’s quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
