LA MIRADA — The La Mirada baseball team is no slouch, ranked No. 3 in California and No. 7 in Maxpreps’ national rankings.
But Corona showed why it is Maxpreps’ top-ranked team in the country, going to La Mirada and beating the Matadores 10-1 to win the Perfect Game SoCal Showdown championship on Tuesday night.
Corona starter Ethin Bingaman gave up only one hit over five innings with nine strikeouts, and the lone hit was all the Matadores would get as the Panthers improved to 4-0.
“Just really happy for our guys, they played a great game,” Corona coach Andy Wise said. “That’s a team that beat us last year and we only lost three games. So, good for us, it’s always good to win. It’s always good to beat a quality opponent like that.”
Bingaman, an Auburn commit, carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
“I felt great, warmed up perfectly, arm felt perfect,” Bingaman said. “Been working on some new stuff and thinking all that, it worked perfectly. Just thought of pounding the zone the whole time, nothing else you can do against them.”
La Mirada coach Jimmy Zurn admitted his team needs to limit mistakes in order to compete with programs like Corona.
“When you play a team like that you gotta play clean defensive baseball,” Zurn said. “You can’t make those type of mistakes against a team like that. It’s early in the year, obviously they’re really good. I feel we have a really good team and I know we’ll probably cross paths again with them.”
La Mirada starter Luke Armijo was locked in a scoreless game through three innings before Corona got to him in the fourth inning when the Panthers tagged him for four runs. He finished with seven strikeouts.
Armijo left after the fourth, but it didn’t stop Corona, which scored six runs in the fifth inning to blow the game open with a 10-0 lead.
Corona’s Billy Carlson belted a three-run homer and doubled in two runs to finish with five RBIs to go with three hits in all. The shortstop talked about breaking the game open over the fourth and fifth innings.
“It feels awesome,” Carlson said. “It’s a great start to the season and we came in with the mindset to go hunt and try to dominate the game. I feel we did a pretty good job today.”
Zurn thought Armijo was battling early and gave La Mirada a chance before Corona’s bats came alive.
“Early on, (Armijo) was getting a lot of swinging misses against a good lineup,” Zurn said. “Just his composure, even when he had some things that didn’t go his way, he takes ownership of it.”
Zurn would also show his frustration, getting ejected over arguing balls and strikes after the game got out of hand.
La Mirada’s Travis Friend finally broke up Bingaman’s no-hitter with a solo home run in the sixth inning, which was the Matadores’ only offensive highlight of the night.
“They are a darn good team,” Zurn said. “We know we gotta clean up a few things before we plan on playing them again down the road. What we can learn is the bar that we need to raise ourselves to and then obviously clean some things up. But there’s no way in any shape or form are we pressing any panic button in this sense.”
The Matadores drop to 3-1 and will have a couple of days off rest before beginning Gateway League play with a doubleheader against Bellflower on Friday.
