Petaluma police arrested two drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence during a six-hour checkpoint Friday night, Sept. 4, that screened more than 1,000 vehicles.

The DUI checkpoint was held from 6 p.m. to midnight on Petaluma Boulevard North at Gossage Avenue near Petaluma Village Premium Outlets, according to the Petaluma Police Department.

Officers stopped or screened 1,043 vehicles during the operation. Two drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said. A third was arrested for violation of a criminal protection order.

14 drivers were cited for driving without a license or with a suspended or revoked license.

Police said checkpoint locations are selected in part based on areas where crashes involving impaired drivers have occurred.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
