WATSONVILLE >> A 20-year-old Sonora man died early Friday morning after attempting to cross Highway 1 near Main Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian reportedly entered the freeway on northbound Highway 1 shortly before 2 a.m. while wearing dark clothing, according to the CHP. The man then reportedly stepped directly in front of a 2019 Honda Civic whose 54-year-old Watsonville driver was heading northbound in the slow lane.

CHP investigators do not believe the Honda’s driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the agency. The crash remained under investigation Friday.
