Alex Valasek rang up nine strikeouts during six innings of work to earn the win Friday night as the San Rafael Pacifics held off the visiting Bakersfield Train Robbers, 9-6, at Albert Park.

The Pacifics veteran, who also played three games with the Oakland Ballers last season, threw five scoreless innings before he was touched for five runs in the eighth. San Rafael pitcher and manager Chris Johnson came on to close out the game in the ninth and get the save.

Keith Whitaker had two base hits and a walk, scored three runs and drove in another for San Rafael (7-0), which took advantage of eight Bakersfield errors. Blake Diggle scored two San Rafael runs.

Running

Dustin Haffner of the Oakland Track Club paced the field in the Marin Mile at Archie Williams High School on Saturday. The 36-year-old finished in 5 minutes, 56.15 seconds.

Reid Lafferty, 15, took second in 5:59.54, with Liz Gottlieb, 48, in third place at 6:00.81. They were followed by Gordon Wintrob, Jim Farrar and Denis Yurchikov.

Kevin Lafferty, 50, placed seventh overall with a time of 6:07.47. Gary Lee and Anna Wallen rounded out the top 10. Tamalpa Runners’ Paul Herrerias, 69, finished 11th in 6:17.66.

Petaluma’s Tyler O’Hara, along with Hawk Mazzotta Moto Camp and NNKC Minimoto, will host a MotoAmerica Mission Mini Cup Qualifier at Sonoma Raceway, July 19-20. The event is a fast track to the Mission Mini Cup National Final in Elkhart Lake, Wis., Aug. 8-10.
