San Rafael resident Ellie McCuskey-Hay and Redwood High’s Annalise Horn scored in the girls long jump at Saturday’s CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High in Clovis.
McCuskey-Hay, a St. Ignatius student who qualified for three finals on Saturday, secured her best finish of the day by placing fourth in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 3 inches, while Horn placed sixth (18’9.5”).
Wilson High’s Loren Webster of Long Beach had the winning mark of 21 feet, 0.25 inches. Transgender athlete A.B. Hernandez of Jurupa Valley had the second-best mark of the day (20’8.75”). Hernandez was the top qualifier in the girls long jump, high jump and triple jump. The California Interscholastic Federation announced new guidelines earlier in the week that allowed an additional student-athlete to compete and medal in events where a trans athlete also competed.
Under those guidelines River City’s Brooke White was also awarded second place with her mark of 19’4.25”, followed in third place by La Canada’s Katie McGuinness at the same height. Accordingly, McCuskey-Hay was moved up to fourth and Horn up to sixth.
McCuskey-Hay took seventh in the 100 meter dash finals in 11.63 seconds — 0.3 seconds off the winning time. Her qualifying time of 11.43 Friday night was a personal record.
McCuskey-Hay also qualified for the 200 final, claiming the final spot in the event Friday night by finishing ninth in 24.20 — 0.04 seconds ahead of the 10th-place finisher. McCuskey-Hay placed eighth on Saturday night with a time of 24.31. Redwood’s Julia Bayon placed 25th in Friday’s qualifying for the 200 at 25.04.
