An inmate at California State Prison, Sacramento died in a homicide Sunday after two other inmates attacked him in an exercise yard, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Jonathan Rude, 39, was attacked about 1:20 p.m., an incident that prison officials attempted to stop by firing a “warning shot,” according to a CDCR news release. Guards began to render medial aid and brought him to the medical personnel at the prison.
A paramedic said that Rude died at 1:43 p.m., according to the news release.
The Sacramento County coroner’s office will attempt to determine Rude’s cause of death. Prison officials found two improvised weapons at the main exercise yard.
The two men accused in the attack — Tyler Yates and Jake Kennedy — have been placed in restrictive housing as the investigation unfolds, the news release stated. Prison officials also said they limited inmates’ movement where the attack happened.
Rude was sent to the prison after he was convicted of stealing a vehicle and other vehicle-related thefts in Butte County. He began serving his four-year sentence Sept. 30.
Yates, 30, came to the Sacramento County prison from San Diego County after he was convicted of first-degree burglary and assault likely to cause great bodily injury. He was sentenced Aug. 21, 2017, to eight years. He murdered another inmate in 2022 and was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole, the news release said.
Yates’ second-degree murder conviction stemmed from killing inmate Nathan Marcus, 33, at a recreation yard, the CDCR has stated.
Kennedy, 32, was to sentenced to six years for carrying a concealed dirk or dagger in San Bernardino County. He was sentenced in February 2020 but then also assaulted a inmate while in prison, the news release said.
