ERIE
Four police sergeants and one officer fired
The Erie Police Department has announced four sergeants and one officer have been fired following an internal investigation that confirmed misconduct within the department.
According to a Dec. 4 release, an Oct. 10 internal complaint led to the investigation. Chief Lee Mathis said the misconduct was not criminal and did not involve any member of the public.
“I recently became aware of incidents involving misconduct by some members of our department while on duty,” Mathis said in the release.
Mathis said in the release that the department still has adequate staffing to respond to calls for service and will be filling vacant positions as soon as possible.
The Erie Police Department did not immediately respond to request for comment. In the release, the department said no further information will be provided about the investigation.
BOULDER
Foothills Trail will close for bridge construction
Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks will close the Foothills Trailhead and North Foothills Trail in north Boulder to install bridges for a new trail.
According to a tweet from OSMP that was posted Monday, Boulder will begin bridge construction as early as Thursday for the new North Sky Trail. The closure will last two weeks, weather permitting.
In January, OSMP may implement additional closures in the area. Off-trail access north of Foothills Trail is prohibited throughout ongoing trail construction.
The new North Sky Trail is three and a half miles long and will connect the Foothills Trail to the Joder Ranch Trail near U.S. Highway 6 and Neva Road. The trail will provide pedestrians with access from Boulder to Left Hand Canyon via bike, walk, or ride. OSMP anticipates completing the North Sky Trail plan in early June depending on weather conditions.
Dogs are not allowed on the trail from May 1 to July 1 to safeguard bird habitats. Once the trail is constructed, visitors should remain on the trail to preserve the habitat and are required to leash their dogs from Aug. 1 to April 30.
