Blythe DeGooyer scored in the 79th minute as the Marin Academy girls soccer team pulled out a 4-3 victory against archrival University on Saturday.
The win allowed the Wildcats (13-1-1, 8-0-0 BCL West) to clinch the regular-season title with two games to spare.
Addie Leary scored in the 14th minute to pull MA level at 1-1. Raya Leikin scored in the 30th minute for a 2-1 MA lead. Leikin was involved again in the 55th minute, taking an indirect free kick that a University player knocked into the net for an own goal and a 3-2 MA lead. University tied the game again eight minute from time but DeGooyer produced the late winner off an assist by Reese Goodenough.
• Riley Pearson scored in second-half stoppage time as Branson earned a 3-2 victory against Casa Grande on Saturday that could prove crucial for North Coast Section seedings. Pearson’s goal was assisted by Sophia Duran, who scored the first two goals for Branson (15-3-2) in the seventh and 61st minutes, respectively. The loss was the first of the season for Casa Grande. Under the new NCS format, the top private schools in Division IV are all expected to be promoted to Division II. Branson travels to Marin Academy next Saturday with potentially the top seed in the D-II playoffs on the line. MA is ranked fourth in NCS while Branson is ranked fifth.
• Nora Snearly scored twice to lead Marin Catholic to a 3-0 victory against Pinole Valley on Saturday. Snearly opened the scoring for MC (10-4-2) off an assist from Lana Whilborg. MC doubled the lead when Alina Franchetti found Whilborg for the second goal. Ava Korich set up Snearly for the third.
• Seniors Shea Morsely and Ana Wang were key to the defensive effort as San Domenico (2-6-4, 0-5-3) battled Convent-Stuart Hall to a 0-0 tie on Saturday.
Boys soccer
Dominic Yu scored in the 75th minute to help Marin Academy to a 1-1 tie against University on Saturday. The result keeps the Wildcats (6-7-5, 6-1-1 BCL West) in front of the Red Devils (9-4-5, 5-1-2) for second place in league. MA hosts first-place Lick-Wilmerding (10-3-1, 7-1-0) on Wednesday.
• Chris Mao scored in the 10th minute and Lucas Shin converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute to lead Branson (6-6-4) to a 2-0 victory against Cloverdale on Saturday.
• Erich Linares scored on a free kick in the second half to lift San Domenico to a crucial 1-0 victory against Stuart Hall on Saturday. The Panthers (4-7-1, 2-6-0 BCL West) improved their odds to earn the fourth and final league playoff spot by taking out the fifth-place Knights (6-7-2, 1-6-1).
Prep wrestling
Redwood High took home two gold medals to place 10th at Saturday’s Redwood Empire Classic in Ukiah.
Redwood’s 157-pounder Alexander Berkowitz captured first place, winning all three matches by pinfall. Berkowitz pinned Arcata’s Owen Wolf in 1 minute, 51 seconds in the gold-medal bout. The Giants’ Jake Heravi (150) won a 11-10 decision over Del Norte’s Remington Escobedo to capture first place. The Giants’ Hayden Schepps (144) finished seventh.
• Archie Williams freshman Kiran Toy (192) won a 6-2 decision over senior Paul Terry of Kings Academy in the medal round to take seventh place at the 15th annual Colt Invitational in Colma on Saturday. The Peregrine Falcons’ Vaughn Pommier went 2-2 in the 115-pound field. Novato junior Anthony Valverde (140) was the runner-up in the Consolation B championship after a loss to King City’s Aaron Macias.
• San Marin’s Tristan Lloyd (167) and Noah Albertson (134) were the only two Mustangs wrestlers to pick up a victory at the Hunter Diemert Memorial in Livermore on Saturday.
College softball
Dominican University beat Central Washington, 9-1, in five innings during the Concordia Kickoff Classic in Irvine on Sunday. Marina Medina went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI for the Penguins (2-1). Taylor Rodriguez allowed one earned run and struck out four in the circle to earn the win while also going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored from the plate.
Women’s basketball
Leniyah Fulsome and Erinn Gardere scored 14 points each, but College of Marin fell to Laney, 70-39, on Friday night. Tali Fa’i added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Mariners (11-11, 6-4 BVC).
Men’s basketball
College of Marin’s skid stretched to six games with Friday’s 91-73 loss to Alameda.
