The Santa Cruz Warriors ran into a buzzsaw named Bronny James and had their six-game win streak end at the hands of the South Bay Lakers, 122-118, in the teams’ NBA G League game at UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo on Monday night.

James, on assignment from Los Angeles, made four 3-pointers and went off for a G League career-high 39 points. The son of the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James also had seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

The Warriors gave up a big run early in the fourth quarter, but Santa Cruz forward Blake Hinson made two of his four 3s in the final 34 seconds to narrow the Warriors’ deficit to 120-118. South Bay’s Stanley Johnson made a pair of free throws with 10.7 second on the clock to seal the win.

Hinson finished with a team-high 34 points for the Warriors (18-13 overall), who dropped into a tie for fifth place in the Western Conference with Rio Grande Valley (18-13) with three games left in the regular season.

The Warriors close their seven-game road trip against the host Lakers on in El Segundo on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before closing the season with home games against the Rip City Remix (13-18) on Friday and Saturday night.

Santa Cruz let one slip away against the Lakers, Two-way forward Jackson Rowe gave the Warriors a 95-94 lead with his dunk with 9:48 remaining, but James buried a 3, reserve guard Sir’Jabari Rice made two layups and reserve forward Joirdon Nicholas threw down a pair of dunks to fuel an 11-0 run and keep the lead for good.

Three of South Bay’s field goals came off Warriors’ turnovers during the decisive run.

South Bay (14-17) pushed its lead to 116-103 with 3:23 left, but the Warriors clawed their way back into contention in a chippy finish.

The Warriors shot 48.4% (46 of 95) and 29.4% (10 of 34) from beyond the arc. Playing without Braxton Key, they were outrebounded 53-44.

Two-way guard Taran Armstrong came off the bench and had 22 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds for Santa Cruz.

Rowe finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

Reserve forward Donta Scott had 11 points and six rebounds for the Warriors. Forward Javan Johnson scored 10 points, guard Yuri Collins had nine points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds, reserve guard Alex Gil-Fernandez scored nine points, and center Seth Maxwell had eight points.

The Lakers didn’t shoot the ball well either.

They finished 46-of-103 shooting (44.7%) from the field, and 6-of-29 (20.7%) on 3-pointers. Rice scored 20 points, Nicholas had 19 points and 12 rebounds, forward Cole Swider had 14 points and five rebounds, and Stanley Johnson had 10 points, six assists, and four rebounds.
