



Santa Cruz’s Keanna Miller advanced from her opening heat at the World Surf League’s BTMI Barbados Surf Pro at Soup Bowl, Bathsheba, Barbados, on Tuesday.
Men’s and women’s competitions are being held at the contest, a Qualifying Series 5,000-point event. The contest window runs through Sunday.
Keanna Miller posted a two-wave score of 11.33 to take second in Heat 3 of the Round of 48, held 4- to 6-foot conditions. She counted wave scores of 4.33 and 7.00, the latter being the highest scored wave of the heat.
Puerto Rico’s Mia Calderon (12.50) took first in the 25-minute heat and also advanced.
Encinitas’ Maddie Stanton (11.17) took third and was eliminated, as was fourth-place finisher Ocea Green (6.00) of Canada.
Miller goes against Malibu’s Talia Swindal, Laguna Beach’s Lilie Kulber, and Encinitas’ Ella McCaffray in Heat 4 of the Round of 32.
In the men’s competition, Santa Cruz’s John Mel competes against San Clemente’s Kei Kobayashi, Encinitas’ Titus Kaimana Santucci and Oceanside’s Timothy Simmers in Heat 14 of the Round of 64.
Boys volleyball
Kirby 3, St. Francis 0 >> Senior outside hitter and captain Will Gust had 11 aces, eight kills, and six digs in the Griffins’ 25-8, 25-6, 25-20 Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division sweep on Monday.
Junior outside hitter Aden Huang had six aces, 14 kills, and 16 digs for the Griffins, and junior middle blocker Seeley Herr had five kills and three blocks.
Women’s tennis
UC Santa Cruz 5, at Lake Forest 2 >> The Banana Slugs secured the win in Lake Forest, Illinois, on Monday.
UCSC took a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles competition. Sara Beckman and Natalie Sprenger won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, Chloe Wu and Melody Ghaffari won 6-4 at No. 2, and Sweden VanHouten and Meghana Damojipurapu won 6-0 at No. 3.
In singles action, Ghaffari won 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 at No. 3, Sprenger dominated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4,, Wu won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, and VanHouten clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
UCSC (7-6) hosts NCAA Division II Dominican (10-3) on April 2 at noon.
