Where did higher education go wrong?
As a retired educator whose career was spent extolling the virtues of education, I am appalled at what I see going on in our society.
Education, especially higher education, has long been considered to be the pathway to success in life. It has also been assumed to be instrumental in producing decent human beings and responsible citizens who are intelligent and capable of making good decisions most of the time. A college degree is also expected to confer upon a person a certain amount of culture, class and civility.
Sadly, this is not always the case. Daily events offer evidence that many of our higher-educated citizens in the world of business and especially in the political world are devoid of the traits mentioned above.
Education has taken a back seat in many instances to self-promotion and the seeking of power and prestige. Some of the positions and statements coming from such persons are so devoid of reason and common sense, one wonders about where did higher education go wrong.
The leading proponent of someone who is highly educated but seemingly has no clue to what that entails is one of our presidential candidates.
His conduct and utterances are so beyond the pale, they can best be summarized as pure unadulterated evil. His campaign has been based on an appeal to the lowest and base instincts in human nature.
Our country has witnessed and dealt with such evil in the past. Most notably the rise and fall of Senator Joe McCarthy who tried to make us believe there was a communist behind every bush.
We got over his foolishness and in this instance, common sense will prevail in dealing with this uneducated educated person.
What's on your mind?
