Santa Rosa Junior College’s football team scored a field goal on its first drive, but Diablo Valley College would go on to score 17 unanswered points to cruise to a 24-10 victory in Saturday’s season opener at Bailey Field in Santa Rosa.

After the Vikings went up 24-3 in the fourth quarter, the Bear Cubs scored their first touchdown of the season. Quarterback Brady Johnson found Khilil Hubbart on a 30-yard pass making the score 24-10.

SRJC had six total turnovers, three fumbles and three interceptions in the contest. Two of those turnovers proved to be costly, as the Vikings scored touchdowns on the ensuing drives.

Quarterback Joshua Milani got the start for SRJC, throwing for 101 yards on 11-for-22 passing with the three interceptions.

Johnson came in at QB, threw for 87 yards on 7-for-17 passing and had the lone TD pass of the game for the Bear Cubs.

Receiver Sean Randall had five receptions for 52 yards and averaged 10.4 yards per catch. His longest reception was 42 yards.

Bear Cubs safety Mason Dean led the team with 20 total tackles, 12 of which were solo.

Former Sacramento State player and Windsor alum Hayden Anderson had 10 total tackles, two pass break ups and an interception in the fourth quarter.

SRJC will travel to Modesto Junior College next Saturday. It will be the season opener for the Pirates. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

Spartans fall to USC

Jayden Maiava passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score, and No. 14 USC opened a season of high expectations with a 42-26 homr victory over San Jose State on Saturday.

Trent Mosley caught seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown in the Orange County product’s impressive debut for the Trojans, who showcased several promising newcomers in coach Lincoln Riley’s offense. Kayden Dixon-Wyatt also caught a TD pass in his debut, while Riley Wormley and Shahn Alston rushed for their first TDs.

USC has College Football Playoff aspirations with a restocked roster around Maiava, who went 25 for 29 as the Trojans built a 35-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter at the Coliseum.

New USC defensive coordinator Gary Patterson’s unit mostly looked sharp until the fourth quarter, when new San Jose State quarterback Luke Weaver led three late touchdown drives against the Trojans’ backup defenders to tighten the final score considerably.

North Carolina wins

New North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. threw for 232 yards, Aeron Burrell kicked two field goals and the Tar Heels opened coach Bill Belichick’s second season with a 15-10 win over TCU on a rainy Saturday in Ireland for the Aer Lingus Classic.

TCU didn’t score again after going up 10-3 on its first two drives. The Horned Frogs got the ball eight more times, and were stopped on fourth-and-short deep in Tar Heels territory on their last two drives.
