Junior receiver Sammy Rebbert scored in the final minute, and the No. 2 seed Scotts Valley High girls flag football team topped No. 3 Aptos 12-7 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Tournament championship at Harbor High on Saturday.

Junior quarterback Jazzy Phillips threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Falcons (10-2). She connected with senior receiver/linebacker Claire Skinner from 20 yards out in the first quarter to give Scotts Valley the lead.

Phillips’ game-winning pass to Rebbert came on fourth down from the 10-yard line.

“They (Skinner and Rebbert) both made great catches in the corner,” Falcons coach Louie Walters said.”Aptos, winner of the inaugural SCCAL Tournament last season, took a 7-6 lead with 3 minutes left in the game. Junior quarterback Ella Porter completed a 3-yard scoring pass to senior Izzy Graff.

The Falcons’ Jazzy Duebek recorded an interception to seal the win.

Scotts Valley beat No. 4 Santa Cruz 27-0 in the semifinals. The Falcons won eight straight games to close the season.

“The girls played well and got better every week,” Walter said.

College football

At Cabrillo 31, Merced 17 >> Quarterback Jamari Vaughns passed for two touchdowns, and running back Kobe Hatten rushed for a pair of scores, as the Seahawks won their third straight Coast Conference game Saturday night.

Brandon George scored on receptions of 15 and 77 yards in the second half. Hatten opened scoring with his 1-yard run in the first quarter and closed scoring with his 23-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks totaled 507 yards on offense, and gave up 245 yards to Merced (2-6, 2-2).

Vaughns finished 16-of-27 passing for 211 yards. He threw one interception. George finished with eight catches for 131 yards. Cruz Ferris had six catches for 59 yards.

Cabrillo’s Ambrose Conteh rushed for a game-high 175 yards on 23 carries, and Hatten went for 110 yards on 20 carries.

Tosin Alade and Rio Cruz each made eight tackles for the Seahawks. Dominic Gruber, DJ Gomez, and Patrick Tripier recorded sacks, and Jeter Olivares made an interception.

Cabrillo (3-5, 3-2) plays at Redwoods (6-2) in a nonconference game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

NBA G League

Valley Suns 133, at Santa Cruz Warriors 104 >> Two-way guard Reece Beekman had a team-high 24 points, six assists, and four rebounds, but the Warriors suffered the loss at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Saturday night.

Two-way center Quinten Post had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors (1-1). Forward Blake Hinson and guard Yuri Collins combined for 35 points off the bench, and forward Kevin Knox II contributed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Guard TyTy Washington Jr. scored a game-high 31 points and added 10 assists for the Valley Suns (1-1). Forward Jalen Bridges finished with 25 points and five rebounds, and center Mamadi Diakite and guard Jaden Shackelford notched 15 points each.

Santa Cruz hosts the South Bay Lakers (1-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Men’s basketball

At Cabrillo 78, Napa 61 >> Max Parmigiani hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 points and Dai’Shaun Buie also scored 17 points in the Seahawks’ nonconference win Saturday.

Zavier Sims scored 14 points for the Seahawks, who trailed 18-8 early but entered the half deadlocked at 29-all. Skylarr Redwood added 13 points.

Cabrillo (2-1) faces Umqua to open the Shasta Tournament on Nov. 21 at 1 p.m.

Chapman 84, at UC Santa Cruz 75 >> Joseph Espy had 24 points and 10 rebounds in the Banana Slugs’ loss at the West Field House on Saturday.

Andrew Ferrara-Jones had 15 points and six rebounds for UCSC, and Ryan Wilson had 13 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Zino Okah added 10 points, five rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and two steals.

UCSC (1-1) hosts George Fox (1-1) at the West Field House on Monday at 2 p.m.

Women’s basketball

At Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 58, UCSC 55 >> Jenna Gorton recorded a double-double in the Banana Slugs’ narrow road loss in their season opener Saturday.

Gordon, a 6-foot-5 junior forward/center out of Pacific Ridge High in San Diego, finished with had 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Talysha Wilkerson, a junior guard out of Chico High, had 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals for UCSC (0-1). Emilie Ngo, a freshman guard out of Oak Grove High in San Jose, had nine points and three rebounds.

Katie Resendiz had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Athenas (1-0). Renee Chong and Ava Grey each added 11 points.

UCSC plays at Pomona Pitzer on Sunday in Claremont at 1 p.m.

Surfing

U.S. Air Force Super Girl Surf Pro >> Santa Cruz’s Keanna Miller tied for 33rd overall at the World Surf League’s U.S. Air Force Super Girl Surf Pro, a Qualifying Series 3,000-point event being held at Jax Beach Pier in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday.

Miller was eliminated after taking third in Heat 16 of the Round of 64. She posted a two-wave total score of 9.24 in the 20-minute heat.

Kirra Pinkerton (15.63) took first in the heat and Puerto Rico’s Faviola Alcala (10.60) took second to advance. Skylar Steinmetz (6.00) took fourth and was also eliminated.

Huntington Beach’s Olivia Storrer, a former Capitola resident, tied for 25th overall. Her sister, Maddie, tied for 33rd.
