Readers respond to Question of the Week:

Which Day One edicts will succeed?

Day One

President Trump’s Day One declarations and executive orders simply exemplify his priorities as he enters his second term of office.

For instance, on his first day in office, President Trump signed approximately 200 executive actions, including measures to undo previous administration mandates and implement his America First utopia policies. These declarations serve as clear and ambitious examples of what he considers important. No surprises. Every one of them was included in campaign speeches. I agree with the editorial accompanying QOTW that President Trump’s out-of-left-field renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and repossessing the Panama Canal are unwelcome distractions, but that’s Donald!

Many edicts will succeed

Trump seems better prepared for his second term as commander in chief. His lawyers and he have been determining which executive orders to sign on Day One since November.

There will be some easy signatures: closing the border and issuing deportation orders to those who have entered illegally, eliminating DEI activity from government agencies, getting government employees back to their offices and bringing back common sense in the auto industry. There will be pardons for the Jan. 6 protesters, and it may be necessary to go through the judicial system to stop drilling in the oceans and on public lands, stop windmill construction and remove birthrights to American children.

Trump has over-promised

Of course Trump has promised more than he can deliver. He cannot turn the mess that Biden has helped to create into a utopia overnight; even America will never be perfect. Treating the drug cartels as terrorists and putting them in the forefront of his plans is a good thing. Something has to be done with the border crisis. I think it should be attempted Day One. I don’t think ending birthright citizenship should necessarily be a priority. If opening up pipelines or pumping more oil can bring gas prices down, that would be great. I want Trump to succeed and hope his successes will make America great again.
