Orchard Lake St. Mary’s opened up the baseball season with a 5-2 victory over Detroit Catholic Central Tuesday at Huron Valley Athletic Complex in Milford before dropping a doubleheader to the Shamrocks the next day.

The Eaglets fell behind in the opener after a first-inning double by senior Aidan Schuck (Oakland University) drove in two, but those turned out to be the only runs allowed by Grand Valley State commit Grant Essig, who went five innings and struck out as many.

St. Mary’s scored all its runs in that one in the bottom of the third, with several of those runs passing on two errors.

On Wednesday, the action turned to Novi and the Shamrocks needed several runs in the bottom of the sixth innings to respond to the pair scored by St. Mary’s in the top of the frame in a 5-4 victory. Will Boisineau had three base knocks for the Eaglets, who had double (eight) the hits the Shamrocks did, but again it was fielding mistakes that swung the tide the way of the winner, in this case St. Mary’s.

The Shamrocks took the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, 2-0. Cal Rutherford (Eastern Michigan) went the distance, allowing only three hits and fanning 10 Eaglets in the shutout. Bennett Thompson drove in both runs for Catholic Central in the victory.
