Mason Korn’s touchdown was no accident.
The senior linebacker forced a fumble and then returned the ball 51 yards to score during a 20-point second quarter that sparked Eisenhower to a 30-12 homecoming victory over Anchor Bay in a Macomb Area Conference Red Division football game at Swinehart Field on Friday night.
Senior Jack Bullock threw a touchdown pass and senior Bryce Hurley ran for a touchdown as the No. 8 Eagles built a 20-0 halftime lead while improving to 2-0 in the division and 4-0 overall.
Korn said the Eagles expected a play like the one he made.
“This whole week we’ve been talking about how running backs in high school carry the ball so loose,” Korn said. “We were working on it in practice all week, and I saw the ball being carried loose, so I punched it out. It jumped up, back into my arms, and I took off to the house.”
Chris Smith, the Ike coach, said Korn put a practice routine to use.
“We work on turnover drills all the time,” Smith said. “That’s a strip drill that we work on. It’s good to see that the kids are doing the stuff that coaches are coaching.”
It was the first career defensive touchdown for Kron, who transferred to Eisenhower this year.
“It was an amazing feeling,” he said. “The field just opened up for me.”
Eisenhower led 7-0 after Bullock threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Burnside and Domenic Fanone kicked the extra point with 6:48 left in the second quarter.
Korn’s touchdown with 4:49 left made it 13-0.
“The strip fumble for six points was a killer,” Anchor Bay assistant coach Bob Schroeder said.
Smith agreed that the second touchdown of the game was big for the Eagles.
“We needed a play like that,” Smith said. “Anchor Bay had us stuffed. We really couldn’t get anything going. That kind of sparked us.”
Schroeder led the Tars in place of head coach Mike Giannone. Giannone, an Anchor Bay spokesperson told MediaNews Group earlier in the day, has been placed on administrative leave.
“Our kids never quit,” Schroeder said after the Tars fell to 0-2 and 2-2. “I was pleased with our effort. It would be nice to be 3-1, but we’re 2-2. We’ve got things ahead of us if the kids accept the challenge.”
Eisenhower’s lead grew to 20-0 when Hurley ran two yards for a touchdown with 1:42 left in the second quarter.
After a scoreless third quarter, the left-footed Fanone kicked a 31-yard field goal for a 23-0 lead.
Gerry Hanson III scored both of Anchor Bay’s touchdowns. His 7-yard run made it 23-6 with 5:34 left in the game, and, after Bullock passed 26 yards to Keaton Duda for Ike’s final touchdown, Hanson caught a 5-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Nolan Vanacker to close the scoring.
Smith told his team the Eagles’ defense played “lights out.”
“I liked that they were playing tough, they were physical,” Smith said. “We were giving up small plays, but we weren’t giving up those big plays. That was important until our offense could find their way.”
Smith empathized with the Tars for having to play without their coach.
“It’s tough coming out here and playing a game with their circumstances,” he said. “I thought they gave a lot of effort. They’re a tough, physical football team. They’ll be back.”
Anchor Bay played without a key running back who was injured. Starting quarterback Ryan Lanfear aggravated an ankle injury in the second quarter, Schroeder said.
Bullock’s 34-yard pass to Gabriel Pettypool helped set up Burnside’s touchdown.
Hurley, an all-state sprinter, ran 38 yards to the Tars’ one to set up his score.
Hanson threw a pass that Michael Orlando turned into a 53-yard gain that preceded Hanson’s second touchdown.
In Week 5, Eisenhower plays at Stevenson while Anchor Bay plays host to Romeo in MAC Red games.
