An emergency radio communication will be demonstrated at the Yolo County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 28, starting at 11:00 a.m., continuing into Sunday, June 29.
Residents can observe radio in use during an emergency drill, communicating across the United States, and learn how local operators can contact some of the 2,800 other stations nationwide in this national exercise. The public is welcome to watch and participate in this demonstration, which is suitable for all ages.
“We will be ready for operation after an early morning setup, as we train to support Yolo County Office of Emergency Services and local hospitals,” offered event co-chair Bill Ragsdale, K6KN. He added, “We hold weekly drills from the comfort of our homes. Now we will be operating realistically using solar power under outdoor conditions.”
The local radio operators will use voice and Morse Code with an elaborate “antenna farm” of beam, vertical and wire antennas.
This exercise has been conducted nationally since 1933. The local Field Day is a joint event between Yolo Amateur Radio Society, Berryessa Amateur Radio Club, Yolo County Amateur Radio Emergency Service, and Sacramento Amateur Radio Club.
Those wishing to attend are asked to enter the Yolo County Fairgrounds using the gate by the main office on East Street.
