College basketball: Arizona sophomore PG Brandon Williams will miss next season with a knee injury, ESPN reported. Williams has had ongoing knee issues since missing his junior season of high school due to a joint condition. He missed multiple games last season in January and February with soreness in his knee. Williams started 21 games in 2018-19, averaging 11.4 points and 3.4 assists.

College football: Defending national champ Clemson was flagged for eight secondary NCAA violations during a yearlong period from July 2018 through June. None of the violations were considered major and all issues about the penalties have been resolved. In all, Clemson self-reported 14 violations in the year ending June 30. ... The NCAA will not implement standardized injury reports this season after the governing body explored the possibility in response to the rise of legalized sports betting. ... Tennessee senior DL Emmit Gooden will miss the upcoming season after tearing the ACL in his right knee Tuesday. He will undergo surgery next week. Gooden recorded seven tackles for loss last season, which ranked second on the team. Also, junior OL Nathan Niehaus left the team. He made six starts at right guard and also played tackle last season.

NHL: Predators F Rocco Grimaldi was awarded in arbitration a one-year contract worth $1 million. Grimaldi, 26, tallied a career-high five goals and eight assists in 53 games last season. He added a team-high three goals in five playoff games.

Soccer: CONMEBOL suspended Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus from international matches for two months because of bad behavior in the Copa America final July 7. He also was fined $30,000 for what the governing body called “insulting and defamatory” actions during Brazil’s 3-1 victory over Peru. Jesus, 22, was sent off after a second yellow card at the 70-minute mark of the match. He protested the decision with hand gestures suggesting the referee had been paid off and then pushed the video assistant referee feed on the sidelines. Brazil and Jesus can appeal the decision.

Tennis: Top-seeded and defending tournament champ Rafael Nadal of Spain beat Daniel Evans of England 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal. Nadal fought off two set points in the first-set tiebreaker. He received a first-round bye. In other notable men’s action, Richard Gasquet of France beat No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-7 (6), 6-2, 7-6 (4). In Toronto, Wimbledon champ and No. 4 seed Simona Halep of Romania claimed a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) second-round victory over qualifier Jennifer Brady. Halep received a first-round bye.
