Purdy agrees to 5-year, $265 million extension with the 49ers, AP source says

SANTA CLARA, Calif. >> Brock Purdy agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $265 million with the San Francisco 49ers, going from the NFL’s biggest bargain to one of the league’s highest-paid players.

A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press that the sides reached agreement Friday on the contract that includes $181 million in total guarantees. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t announced the deal yet.

NFL Network first reported the deal.

Purdy has made less than $1 million a year for his first three seasons and was set to get a small raise in 2025 to about $5.2 million under the league’s proven performance escalator for making the Pro Bowl last season before reaching this new deal that puts Purdy in the top 10 in quarterback contracts.

Ayuso bursts to stage win as Roglic takes overall lead at Giro d’Italia

TAGLIACOZZO, Italy >> Primož Roglic took the overall lead of the Giro d’Italia and Juan Ayuso impressed with his victory in the first summit finish on Friday.

The Spaniard earned his first ever Grand Tour stage victory with a burst of energy 400 meters before the end of the seventh stage, ahead of his UAE Team Emirates teammate Isaac Del Toro and Egan Bernal.

Roglic, the pre-race favorite and 2023 champion, crossed next — the peloton all four seconds back.

It was good enough for Roglic to take the pink jersey. Ayuso improved to second overall, trailing Roglic by four seconds. Del Toro was third, nine seconds off the lead.

Friday’s stage was the hardest so far with four classified climbs on the 168-kilometer (104 mile) route from Castel di Sangro, including the top category ascent to the finish in Tagliacozzo.

“This win is a big step in my career,” Ayuso said. “This is my fourth Grand Tour, I’ve been close to winning at the Vuelta. To do it today at my first Giro d’Italia is special.”

Ayuso calculated his late push.

Alcaraz advances to his 1st Italian Open final, will face Sinner or Paul for the title

ROME >> Carlo Alcaraz advanced to his first Italian Open final with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Lorenzo Musetti on Friday.

It’s the third final in three clay-court events this season for Alcaraz, who won the Monte Carlo Masters and finished runner-up in the Barcelona Open before withdrawing from the Madrid Open because of injury.

A four-time Grand Slam champion, Alcaraz is preparing to defend his title at the French Open, which starts May 25.

In Sunday’s final, Alcaraz will face either top-ranked Jannik Sinner or No. 12 Tommy Paul, who were playing in the night session at the Foro Italico.

The women’s final on Saturday features Coco Gauff against Jasmine Paolini.

Paolini and partner Sara Errani also advanced to the women’s doubles final when they beat Russian pair Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-4 in a rematch of last year’s Olympic final also won by the Italians.

The third-ranked Alcaraz withdrew from the Madrid tournament with an upper right leg issue and also had a left leg injury. In Rome, he has been wearing a long black brace covering the upper portion of his right leg stretching down to just below his knee.
