Valparaiso police arrested two men late Thursday morning after a brief standoff with one of them followed an alleged daytime burglary.
At 10:25 a.m. Thursday, Valparaiso police were called to the 400 block of Galway Drive in the Shamrock subdivision for a possible burglary in progress, according to a news release from Sgt. Michael Grennes, the department’s public information officer.
A person contacted police when the person saw two suspicious individuals and a vehicle at a neighbor’s house, Grennes said, adding the caller knew the neighbors were not home at the time.
Police arrived and determined forced entry had been made into the home, a report said. Police located a man exiting a back door who immediately re-entered the house after seeing police and allegedly refused to leave, Grennes said.
Officers set up a perimeter around the house, and the Porter County Emergency Response Team was called.
Before the response team arrived, Ricky Mcabee, 36, of Gary, left the house and was taken into custody, police said. A second person remained inside the house and refused to exit, Grennes said.
The team entered the house, locating a man allegedly hiding in the residence. The second person was taken into custody about 11:35 a.m. and was identified as Aaron Swelfer, 28, of Merrillville, police said.
Police transported both men to Porter County Jail on felony burglary charges.
