


Rashell Diaz scored on a penalty kick and Nina Iyer added a second goal as the Terra Linda High girls soccer team held on to secure a 2-1 upset win at Marin Catholic in the North Coast Section Division II playoffs on Tuesday.
The No. 12 Trojans (10-6-3) went ahead 2-0 on Iyer’s goal. No. 5 MC (12-7-2) pulled within 2-1 on a goal by Nora Snearly but was unable to find a late equalizer.
TL moves into the quarterfinals to face No. 4 Urban (16-5-0) at Beach Chalet #2 in San Francisco on Friday.
TL coach Dylan Arroyo credited his back line of Libby Ngo, Remi David, Katherine King and Sammie Foley with a strong defensive game against MC. Goalie Jojo Fetterman-Riggle made a number of saves for TL.
TL ended up winning the season series against MC 2-1. The teams split the first two meetings with the Trojans winning 1-0 in league play then the Wildcats winning 2-0 in last week’s MCAL playoffs.
• Reese Goodenough scored twice and had three assists and Raya Leikin added a hat trick as top-seeded Marin Academy made quick work of No. 16 Salesian 8-0 in the D-II playoffs. MA (19-2-1) scored four times in the last 10 minutes of the first half to push the lead to 5-0 and turn the game into a blowout. Blythe DeGooyer, Kacy Walker, and Lily Weaver also had goals for MA. Addie Leary had two assists and DeGooyer set up another goal. MA awaits the winner between No. 8 Clayton Valley Charter and No. 9 Foothill.
• Second-seeded Branson (17-6-2) was unable to cash in on a couple of breakaway chances and a penalty kick during a season-ending 2-0 loss to No. 15 Cardinal Newman (8-11-1) in the D-II playoffs on Tuesday.
• Mari Rode scored twice as Archie Williams rallied out of an early hole before falling to Heritage on penalties following a 3-3 tie in regulation in the D-III playoffs on Tuesday. The No. 5 Peregrine Falcons (5-7-5) trailed 2-0 in the first 15 minutes. Rode got Archie Williams on the board early in the second half then Caroline Lozaw tied the game at 2-2 midway through the half. Rode’s second goal put the Peregrine Falcons ahead 3-2 with a few minutes left but No. 12 Heritage scored late to force extra time.
Girls basketball
Avery Myerberg scored 28 points to lead No. 4 Branson to a 50-38 victory against No. 13 Antioch at Novato High in the NCS D-III playoffs on Tuesday night. Alyssa Huang made a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points for the Bulls. Kate Spaulding added eight points. Branson (16-12) hosts No. 5 Dougherty Valley (19-10) at College of Marin on Friday.
• Carly Amborn and Tosia Konczak scored 20 points apiece to power No. 8 San Domenico to a 51-47 home win against No. 9 Benicia (17-10) in the D-III playoffs on Tuesday. Amahji Cook scored seven points, including four late in the game to help the Panthers (17-16) retake the lead. San Domenico moves on to the quarterfinals against top-seeded St. Bernard’s (27-2) on Friday. If both San Domenico and Branson win on Friday, they’d face each other in the semifinals next week.
• Brooke Denler and Maya Saibel led a balanced scoring effort for Redwood in a 63-45 victory against No. 11 Freedom in the D-I playoffs on Tuesday. The No. 6 Giants (21-9) advance to Friday’s quarterfinals against either No. 3 Arcata or No. 14 Montgomery. Kitty White added 10 points for Redwood, Rachel Towns had nine, Drew Schultz scored eight, and Hindi Copeland added six.
Women’s basketball
Former Redwood High standout Kylie Horstmeyer was named the West Coast Conference’s Player of the Week on Monday. Horstmeyer averaged 23 points per game and shot 58% from the floor as San Diego picked up wins against Pacific and Santa Clara last week.
Horstmeyer tied her career high with 26 points in an overtime victory against Pacific, including a game-tying 3-pointer to force the overtime period. Horstmeyer scored 20 points to go with a season-high eight rebounds against Santa Clara.
• Abby Cooper scored 14 points to pace Dominican University to its eighth consecutive win, a 57-48 victory against Academy of Art on Monday night. Alyssa Alvarado (13 points), Andraya Perez (12), and Alaiyah San Juan (10) also scored in double figures for the Penguins (19-9, 13-4 PacWest), who limited Academy of Art (10-14, 3-13) to two points in the first quarter.
Men’s basketball
Darius Best scored a game-high 18 points but it wasn’t enough to prevent Dominican from sliding to its fourth consecutive loss, 69-64 against Academy of Art on Monday. Jordan Archie added 13 points for the Penguins (9-16, 4-13).
College baseball
Former Novato High standout Derek Bartram hit a two-run homer to account for all of College of Marin’s scoring in a 5-2 home loss against Skyline on Tuesday. Bartram homered in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2 for the Mariners (5-7-1). Skyline scored twice in the sixth inning and added an insurance run in the ninth.
