


Vladimir Guerrero Jr. plans to become a free agent after the season following the passing of his deadline Tuesday to reach a long-term agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays.
“The last couple days, the front office, my lawyers, my agents, they met, both (sides) tried but obviously we couldn’t get an agreement,” Guerrero said through interpreter Hector Lebron at Blue Jays camp. “We never got to the point where I felt like I wanted to do the deal.”
A four-time All-Star at age 25, Guerrero said during the offseason he would cut off negotiations when he reported for spring training.
Guerrero hit .323 last season with a .940 OPS, 30 homers and 103 RBIs.
Cubs sign Justin turner >> Justin Turner has agreed to a $6 million, one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs.
The addition of Turner would give the team some security at third base should Matt Shaw need more seasoning in the minors.
Turner played for Toronto and Seattle last year, batting .259 with 11 homers, 55 RBIs and a .354 on-base percentage in 139 games.
Ohtani gets second bullpen session >> Shohei Ohtani threw his second bullpen session of spring training continuing the process of his return to the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ohtani had his first bullpen session on Saturday.
He hopes to pitch this season for the first time since Aug. 23, 2023, with the Los Angeles Angels. Ohtani underwent elbow surgery that limited the 30-year-old right-hander to hitting only last season with the Dodgers.

Panthers resign QB Dalton >> The Carolina Panthers re-signed quarterback Andy Dalton to a two-year contract, giving them a veteran presence behind starter Bryce Young heading into the 2025 season.
The 37-year-old Dalton, who threw for 989 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions in five starts last season, was set to become an unrestricted free agent next month. Dalton joined the Panthers in 2023 and spent the past two seasons mainly backing up Young, the No. 1 overall pick that year.
Commanders hire Jesse Madden, John Madden’s grandson >> The Washington Commanders have hired Jesse Madden, John Madden’s grandson, as an offensive quality control coach.
Jesse Madden, a recent Michigan graduate, was a quarterback for the Wolverines his freshman season in 2021 before switching to defensive back. He was a member of Michigan’s 2024 national championship team.
John Madden, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, had a 103-32-7 record in 10 NFL seasons coaching the Oakland Raiders and led them to a win in the Super Bowl in the 1976 season before his lengthy run as an NFL broadcaster.

TCU retires Desmond Banes number >> TCU has retired the No. 1 jersey of Desmond Bane, the standout guard who helped lead the Horned Frogs to their first NCAA Tournament in 20 years in 2018 the season after they won the NIT championship when he was a freshman.
Bane, now in his fifth season with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, was honored at halftime of TCU’s game against Texas Tech. He is the sixth Horned Frogs player to have his jersey retired, and it came a year after Kenrich Williams’ No. 34 was retired.

AC Milan knocked out of champions league >> AC Milan was to left rue Theo Hernandez’s sending off for diving as Feyenoord advanced to the Champions League last 16 at the former European champion’s expense with a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their playoff.
Hernandez earned his second yellow card for a dive in the 51st minute when Milan was dominating after forward Santiago Giménez’s first-minute goal had leveled the tie against his former team.

Djokovic knocked out in Qatar open >> Novak Djokovic was upset by Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the Qatar Open in the Serb’s first match since exiting the Australian Open with a hamstring injury.
The 37-year-old Djokovic, ranked No. 7, lost to the Italian for the first time in five career matches and will have to wait to join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the only players in the ATP Tour’s 100-win club.
Raducanu knocked out, Sabalenka and Swiatek advance in Dubai Championships >> Emma Raducanu lost in the second round at the Dubai Championships to Karolina Muchova 7-6 (6), 6-4.
The 2021 U.S. Open champion, who appeared to be in tears as she went to the umpire’s chair after the second game, fell behind 4-0 before forcing a tiebreaker.
Earlier, second-seeded Iga Swiatek beat Victoria Azarenka 6-0, 6-2 and will next face Dayana Yastremska for a spot int the quarterfinals.
