The play-in round of the Class 6A and Class 5A basketball postseasons was unkind to teams from Boulder, Broomfield and Longmont, as area boys and girls teams finished a combined 0-9.

Oof.

The first round starts this weekend, though, with the boys going on Friday followed by the girls on Saturday. And 11 local programs remain in the hunt.

In Tuesday’s boys play-in round, 6A No. 26 Legacy, No. 30 Boulder and No. 32 Erie ran into hot-shooting teams in home losses. Silver Creek, ranked 35th in 5A, lost on the road.

Then on Wednesday, the girls from 6A No. 40 Fairview, No. 37 Boulder and No. 31 Legacy fell. The Lightning’s 51-45 overtime loss to No. 34 Vista PEAK Prep was highlighted by Jade Hibbler’s game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation. In 5A, No. 34 Niwot lost by a bucket at No. 31 Aurora Central, 35-33, while No. 33 Longmont lost by 11 at No. 32 Grand Junction.

Below is a quick look at each local first-round matchup.

Class 6A boys

No. 22 Overland at No. 11 Broomfield

The Eagles (16-7) are 10-0 this season when scoring at least 70 points. And they’re 6-7 when they don’t.

Good news for Broomfield: Its offense has been clicking quite well of late.

During the Eagles’ current five-game win streak, they’ve scored at least 71 in four of them. Senior point guard Jack Wadlington has helped lead the way this winter, averaging 6.5 assists per game, which is eighth-best in the state.

Broomfield faced Overland (10-13) on Jan. 4 and beat the Trailblazers 80-72. Will Lapham (11.1 PPG) had a career-high 28 points to lead the way.

Siraaj Ali (16.5 PPG) is the headliner for Overland.

No. 17 Fairview at No. 16 George Washington

The Knights (16-7) hit a bit of a rough patch late in the regular season, losing their final four games. It spoiled their chances of hosting in the first round.

But Fairview is still plenty dangerous. Spencer Brown (17.2 PPG), Toray Davis (12.0) and Trevor Ochs (11.3) can all lead them in scoring on any given night. Brown has scored 20 or more points in four of his past six games.

Jeremiah Trimm (14.5 PPG, 7.6 RPG) leads the way for George Washington (14-9).

No 24 Monarch at No. 9 Regis Jesuit, 6 p.m.

The Coyotes (14-9) are led by Logan Laverty, the scoring leader in the Granite Peaks League.

He averaged 19.9 points per game this season. And he comes into the playoffs red-hot, averaging 30 PPG on 52% shooting over his past three games.

But the Coyotes will have their hands full with another star — Regis Jesuit’s Eric Fiedler (23.6 PPG, 7.7 RPG). In his past three, the 6-foot-8 junior averaged 28.7 PPG on 52% shooting.

The Raiders (17-6) are 5-0 against Monarch since 2020.

5A boys

No. 23 Lewis-Palmer at No. 10 Mead

The Mavericks can beat you with their offense, especially when senior Matthew Angelo (18.1 PPG), Kyler Crump (15.5 PPG) or Max Windhorst (12.3 PPG, 9.1 RPG) are in full form.

And when their defense is in high gear, they can be one of the best teams in the class.

In their regular-season finale against 4A No. 12 Holy Family, they held the Tigers to 38% from the field and 2-of-15 shooting from deep in a 52-45 win.

They face a struggling Lewis-Palmer (11-12), which lost five straight to end the year.

No. 22 Grand Junction at No. 11 Longmont

Longmont (15-8) against Grand Junction (12-10) could be billed as a clash of defense. And rightfully so as the Trojans (allowing 48.7 PPG) and the Tigers (allowing 47.6) are both giving up less than 50 points per game.

But the Trojans have offensive firepower as well, led by junior Dominic Lombrano (11.3 PPG). In his last two games of the regular season, he averaged 17 points on better than 50% shooting. In his past three, he’s 7 of 15 (47%) from 3-point range.

No. 17 Frederick at No. 16 Green Mountain

The Golden Eagles (12-11) beat Green Mountain (14-9) by 11 on Dec. 10. It was the last game of the season played by Fredrick standout big man Jovan Aldana, who tore his ACL.

Three months later, Frederick looks different but is playing well with five wins in its past seven games. Its most impressive performance of late might have been its 67-60 win over 6A No. 17 Fairview on Feb. 18. In it, Olly Justice scored all of his career-high 24 points from behind the arc, where he went 8 of 10.

Green Mountain, meanwhile, is led by Simon Lunsford (17 PPG, 5.8 RPG). The 6-foot-4 senior helped lead the Rams to five straight wins to close out the regular season.

Class 6A girls

No. 24 Erie at No. 9 Arvada West

Erie (15-8) dropped its season opener to Arvada West (20-3) on Dec. 3, 35-25. But the Tigers have played their best basketball over the past few weeks, finishing the season with six wins over seven games.

Both teams are strong defensively, with Erie (allowing 32.3 PPG) and A-West (allowing 35.3) both finishing the regular season as one of the stingier squads in the class.

Juliet Slater (13.0 PPG) leads Erie’s offense.

No. 20 Monarch at No. 13 Columbine

Monarch’s 6-foot-4 forward Sienna Williams (18.6 PPG, 15.2 RPG) has already established herself as one of the brightest stars on the state’s basketball scene. And she’s just a sophomore.

Williams scored 30 on 14-of-28 shooting in a regular season-ending win over Centaurus. She also had 15 boards to tally her 20th double-double of the season.

The Coyotes are 6-0 against Columbine (17-6) dating back to 2006. But on Saturday, they’ll look for the upset.

The Rebels are led by Taylor Speir and Jordyn Washington, who are both averaging 16.7 PPG.

No. 30 ThunderRidge at No. 3 Broomfield

Broomfield (22-1), winners of the Granite Peaks League, has won 13 straight dating back to its loss to No. 2 Valor Christian on Jan. 11. Twenty of its 22 wins are by double figures.

The Eagles have a star in 6-foot-4 freshman Reece Gilpatrick (14 PPG, 5.7 PRG), who has at least 10 points on 70% or better shooting in her past four games. She’s already getting offers from Power Four programs from across the country.

ThunderRidge (12-12), meanwhile, beat Poudre 37-19 in the play-in round. The Grizzlies haven’t won consecutive games since December.

5A girls

No. 31 Aurora Central at No. 2 Mead

Mead (20-3) is undersized, and its top scorer, Madi Clark, is averaging just 12.8 PPG.

And it’s among the few state-title favorites in the class.

The Mavericks are well-coached and relentless on the defensive end. And because of it, they have blown out just about everybody on their 2024-25 slate, where they won 20 games in a season for a fourth straight winter.

They’re outscoring teams on average, 56-37. Their only in-state loss came to 6A No. 3 Broomfield on Feb. 18.

For Aurora Central (14-8), Jamaea Johnson-Gonzales averaged 16.1 PPG and 10.5 RPG during the regular season. The Trojans beat Niwot by two in the play-in game on Wednesday, while the Mavs beat the Cougars by 42 on Jan. 24.

No. 39 Pueblo County at No. 7 Frederick

Frederick (17-6) comes into the postseason on a seven-game win streak.

Yep, the Golden Eagles appear to be hitting on all cylinders — all but apparently the rim.

Rylee Gallegos (7.1 PPG) is on a tear offensively, averaging 13.2 PPG over her past five games. She had a career-best 21 on 8-of-13 shooting in a win over Longmont last weekend.

If she continues to produce those kinds of numbers, and if Zoe Wittler (13.1 PPG) is in full form, the Golden Eagles might be in store for another long stay in the bracket. Last season, they got to the quarterfinals.

Pueblo County (10-14) is led by Rylee Stupnik (10.3 PPG, 8.9 RPG), who has scored in double figures in her past four games.
