The Woodland Library Rose Club is pleased to announce that Trevor Harryman has been awarded the Bobbie Ochoa Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 academic scholarship is awarded to students based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and moral character.
Harryman is the grandson of Rose Club member, Kathy Harryman. He recently completed his first year at UC Santa Cruz, where he took prerequisite classes that will enable him to proceed with an Electrical Engineering degree. Harryman maintained a 3.0 g.p.a while enrolled in challenging classes, such as Calculus II and Physics.
To balance the demanding class load, Harryman spent time hiking, biking, playing tennis, and occasionally playing pickleball. He admits that he couldn’t be a true Santa Cruz Banana Slug without spending at least some time hanging out at the beach.
Following graduation, Harryman would like to further his education and pursue a master’s in electrical engineering. He would like to eventually make a career with a job that makes a difference in the world. He is excited for his future and intends to continue pushing himself to prove to his inner self how far a person can go with determination and drive.
The Woodland Library Rose Club was founded in 1989 to establish and maintain the rose gardens at the Woodland Public Library. The scholarship has been given yearly in memory of Roberta “Bobbie” Ochoa, who passed away in 2012. She was a native Woodlander, an active member of the Rose Club, and a valued member of the Woodland community at large.
Members of the community interested in donating to the scholarship fund can send their donation to the Woodland Library Rose Club Bobbie Ochoa Scholarship Fund, 250 First St., in Woodland. Anyone interested in joining the Rose Club can also inquire at the above address or by visiting the gardens on Wednesday mornings, where you will find members tending to the rose gardens.
Last year, Rose Club scholarship winners were Nicholas Safran and Harryman.
Safran is the son of Rose Club members Greg and Dolores Safran. Last year, he completed his second year of studies at Sacramento City College and will attend Sacramento State, where he will continue his studies in computer science. He will take computer programming and art classes, with aspirations of eventually working in the entertainment industry.
