A 26-year-old man has admitted killing his roommate and attempting to hide the body in their Warren apartment, prosecutors said Monday.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said Donald Renfroe entered a no contest plea in Macomb County Circuit Court to the murder of James Wilkins. Judge Anthony Servitto set the sentencing for July 7.

“Mr. Wilkins life was cut short in the very dwelling that should have been his safe place,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a news release. “My office stands as the voice of the victim to bring justice to this horrible act that stole this victim’s life and destroyed a family.”

According to prosecutors, Renfroe shot and killed Wilkins in their Warren apartment on June 8, 2023.

A 27-year-old father, Wilkins was previously reported missing by his family and friends the day after the fatal shooting. Warren police said investigators immediately suspected foul play.

Renfroe worked along with an accomplice, Darius Glenn, 28, to clean out his and Wilkins’ apartment and dispose of his body, police said. He fled to Ohio after the murder, where he was later arrested on unrelated charges and transported back to Michigan.

Investigators said they found a recently-patched bullet hole in the wall and blood. Renfroe had also rented cleaning equipment and purchased additional cleaning supplies from a local hardware store the day Wilkins disappeared.

Wilkins’ body was discovered in Washtenaw County five months later with information provided by the accomplice Glenn. Renfroe and Glenn were apprehended and charged.

Glenn, who was charged with tampering with evidence and being an accessory after the fact, testified against Renfroe at the preliminary exam held in April as part of plea bargain for his case.

Renfroe was initially charged with first-degree murder, but prosecutors allowed him to plead to charges of second-degree murder. He also agreed to plead to tampering with evidence, concealing the death of an individual, and felony firearm.

His defense attorney, Jeffrey Cocojar, couldn’t be immediately reached for comment Monday.

Renfroe faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced later this summer.
