Senior pitcher Nash Horton threw the first perfect game in St. Francis High baseball history on Saturday, and the Sharks edged Salinas 1-0 with a walk-off victory in Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division play.

Horton, a Pepperdine University commit who overcame surgery to repair a torn labrum as a sophomore, struck out 10 of the 21 batters he faced. He threw a total of 79 pitches for the Sharks (8-4, 3-3).

He faced a full count just twice.

“Pitchers’ performance today,” said Ken Nakagawa, the Sharks’ head coach. “Nash had quality pitches today. He pounded the zone and was able to throw three pitches for strikes, and our defense played very well. You don’t see a perfect game every day.”

Anticipating extra innings, Nakagawa told one of his players to start warming up in the seventh, but Horton told his coach he wasn’t coming out of the game.The Sharks’ offense stepped up in the bottom half of the inning to make their tense exchange a moot point.

“For a freshman to have a quality at-bat and get a base knock for a game winner was huge,” Nakagawa said. “It was a great team win, a great high school baseball game.”

Senior Rico Maturino started and threw four shutout innings for the Cowboys (5-8, 2-6). Sophomore Nico Lopez threw 2 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss. They gave up a combined two hits and five walks and struck out six batters.

The game was a make-up game for Tuesday’s rainout.

The Sharks host Palma (10-2, 4-2) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Santa Cruz 13, at Half Moon Bay 10; 8 inn. >> Senior shortstop Damos Deworken had four hits, including two triples, five RBI, and four runs scored in the Cardinals’ nonleague thriller Saturday.

The Cougars scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force the extra inning.

Seth Jin had two hits, three RBI, and scored twice for the Cardinals. Cam Fusari had three hits and two RBI, and Fernando DaCosta had three hits and one RBI. AJ Dacosta had two hits and scored twice, and August Swanson and Matteo Caltabiano each had a hit and scored twice.

Brady Miller had two hits and two RBI for the Cougars (4-10).

Santa Cruz (7-2) plays at Santa Teresa (6-6) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

At Aptos 4, Pacific Grove 3 >> Finn Cormier had a hit and two RBI in the Mariners’ nonleague win Saturday.

Nate Garcia had two hits, including a double, and scored a run for the Mariners. Dom Castillo doubled and scored a run, and Cole McGillicuddy and Kaden Kusiak also scored runs. Damien Espinoza had one RBI.

McGillicuddy started on the mound and gave up three runs, two earned, over three innings. Teammate Alec Mendoza was sensational in three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. He struck out six batters, walked one and gave up one hit.

Aptos (4-8, 1-4) plays at Scotts Valley (6-8, 2-3) on April 15 at 4 p.m.

Watsonville 13, at Silver Creek 11; 9 inn. >> Senior Rudy Valdez had six hits, including a double and two triples, three RBI, and scored four runs in the Wildcatz’s rollercoaster nonleague victory Saturday.

Watsonville scored in the top of the seventh to take a 9-7 lead, but the Raiders scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to forced extra innings. Both teams scored twice in the eighth inning.

Mathew Silva had four hits, one RBI, and a run scored for the Wildcatz. Patrick Miller-Brown had three hits, two RBI, and scored four runs. Ben Miller scored twice.

Wyatt Sharp and Nathan Nunez each had two hits and two RBI for the Raiders (8-3).

The Wildcatz have scored 10 or more runs in five straight games — all wins.

Watsonville (5-9, 4-0) plays at Marina (0-7, 0-2) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

College baseball

At Cabrillo 7, West Valley 3 >> The Seahawks posted their second upset of NorCal’s No. 2 ranked team in three days Saturday and put the rest of the Coast Conference South Division on notice: Cabrillo is not an easy out.

Diego Grabiel had three hits, three RBI, two stolen bases, and run scored for the Seahawks (12-19, 5-7). Jayson Schmeisser had three hits, one RBI, and scored twice. Adrian Castaneda had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored. Kaiden Hoapili had two hits and one RBI. Carlos Cruz had two hits and scored twice.

Kai Laxa had two hits and three RBI for the second-place Vikings (24-8, 10-2), who dropped behind Ohlone (28-4, 11-1) in the division standings with their second straight loss.

Christian Trejo gave up one run over 3 2/3 innings of middle relief and earned the win. Julian Ito was tagged for 12 hits and six runs over 4 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Cabrillo plays at Monterey Peninsula (17-14, 5-7) on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The teams are tied for third place with eight games left in the regular season.

Jack’s Surfboards Pro >> Santa Cruz’s John Mel tied for 25th place on Saturday at the World Surf League’s Jack’s Surfboards Pro, a Qualifying Series 4,000-point event in Huntington Beach.

Mel posted a two-wave total score of 11.13 for fourth place in Heat 1 of the Round of 32. He finished behind Sebastian Williams (14.40) of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca; Will Deane (11.84) of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; and San Clemente’s Cannon Carr (11.20) in the heat.

Williams and Deane advanced, but Carr was eliminated.

High school softball

At North Monterey County 27, Pajaro Valley 8; 5 inn. >> Olivia Contreras and Elena Barron had a hit, one RBI, and a run scored in the Grizzlies’ nonleague loss Saturday.

Julie Ortiz had four hits, including a double and triple, six RBI, and three runs scored for the Condors (1-11).

Pajaro Valley (2-7) hosts vs. Anzar on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Men’s tennis

Tjoa, Radin Sadeghi, Hidas, Mayur Nookala, Wang, and Tandon earned singles wins in straight sets for UCSC.
