


Hikes offered at Indiana Dunes National Park’s Miller Woods
Join a ranger for a hike through the Indiana Dunes National Park’s Miller Woods from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. every Sunday during the summer beginning at the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education, 100 N. Lake St., Gary. The hike encompasses varied habitats including globally rare black oak savanna, interdunal pannes, wetlands and sand dunes that offer views of Lake Michigan and Chicago. Information: 219-395-1882 or
Porter County compost sites close for the holiday
All three public compost sites in Porter County will be closed Thursday in observance of Independence Day. The sites will reopen July 5. Regular season hours for the Valparaiso compost site are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays at 2150 W. Lincolnway. Regular hours for the Boone Grove site are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays at 546 S. 400 West. Regular hours for the Portage compost site are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays at 6451 U.S. 12. Information:
Independence Day celebration at Wolf Lake
A Fourth of July Celebration will be held Thursday at the Pavilion at Wolf Lake, 2324 Calumet Ave., Hammond. The annual naturalization ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. The Bill Porter Orchestra will perform after the ceremony.The evening will conclude with fireworks. The event is free. to finish Hebron mural
Hebron High School art teacher Karen Jania is seeking community involvement to finish painting a mural from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the old police station, 104 E.
