A man who was killed in a motorcycle crash in Shelby Township over the weekend has been identified as a Lapeer County resident, police said Monday.

Paul William McDonald, 38, of Lapeer, died Sunday in Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township shortly after the crash.

According to an updated news release, police said the incident took place about 12:15 p.m. when the motorcycle McDonald was driving crashed on a private driveway in front of Murphy USA Gas on Shelby Parkway.

Security video and the initial investigation showed McDonald turned left from 23 Mile Road on to the driveway.

“McDonald appeared to lose control of his motorcycle after completing the turn and a rapid acceleration occurred,” police said in the release.

Investigators said the motorcycle crossed over the center of the driveway, struck a curb, and crashed into a light post.

Shelby Township firefighters arrived and rendered aid until McDonald was transported to the hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.

Alcohol use and speed do not appear to be a factor in this crash, police said.

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with more information is requested to contact Detective Sgt. Jordan Haughee at 586-731-2121 x333 or jhaughee@shelbytwp.org.
