BURBANK >> The only team that stood in front of the Muir football team and a Pacific League championship last season was a crafty Burroughs team. But the Mustangs have some magic of their own this year and showed it early and often as they made a major statement with a 50-6 win over Burroughs on Friday night in league action.

Muir (5-2, 4-0) avenged a narrow 32-27 loss to Burroughs (5-2, 3-1) last year and now has the inside track for its first outright Pacific League title since 2013.

“(Burroughs) has been kicking our butt the past two years so it was good to come in here and get a win,” said Muir coach Lance Mitchell. “All glory to God and credit to these kids. They work hard. We’re trying to stay locked in, stay focused and get better every week.”

The Mustangs were led by quarterback Keyon Mills and an emerging star in freshman Noah Bozeman. Mills completed 10 of 12 passes for 139 yards and threw five touchdowns. All of that came in the first half as Muir built a 43-0 lead.

Bozeman caught six passes for 64 yards and scored three touchdowns.

“(Bozeman) is a stud,” Mitchell said. “That’s the guy you want. That’s the guy who plays in college and goes far. I haven’t done much. He showed up that way. I can’t take credit for him. He’s just that good.”

Muir dominated the game from the opening kickoff and wasted little time scoring.

The Mustangs grabbed a 7-0 lead just over one minute into the game when Mills found a streaking Zion McDonald down the left sideline for a 68-yard touchdown. McDonald slowed down, jumped up and caught the ball. He shook off his defender to scamper into the end zone.

Bozeman scored his first touchdown of the game when Mills hit him in the end zone on the left side for 24-yard score and a 14-0 lead with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter. Bozeman scored again on a sweep when he ran from left to right and took a forward pitch from Mills, which is technically a pass, and ran 9 yards into the end zone. Mills then ran the ball in after a bad snap on the PAT which resulted in a 2-point conversion and a 22-0 Mustangs lead with 1:16 left in the quarter.

Bozeman and Mills were hardly finished. They connected again halfway through the second quarter when Mills found him on the right side for a 16-yard touchdown toss. That put Muir up 36-0.

So which touchdown did Bozeman like best?

“Definitely the fade,” he said referring his first touchdown, the 24-yard score. He explained why.

“The ball placement, the tracking of the ball. It felt good.”

Mills threw his fifth touchdown pass with just five seconds left in the second quarter when he found Guy Blaylock in the end zone for a 3-yard pass which put Muir up 43-0.

The Mustangs defense shut down the Bears offense all night. Muir held the Bears to 77 total yards in the first half and 214 yards total in the game.

The Mustangs forced two turnovers — a fumble and an interception. The fumble came in the second quarter when Matteo Tarca was stripped after catching a pass. Blaylock recovered the ball to keep Muir in charge 36-0.

The interception happened in the fourth quarter when Ethan Leyland picked off a Mingus Allen pass in Muir territory to prevent a touchdown.

The Mustangs have now won five straight games after starting the season 0-2 with losses to tough Bonita and Charter Oak teams. Mitchell said his squad has its sights set on a league championship and possibly playing in Division 6 in the CIF Southern Section playoffs. Muir was in Division 7 last year and made it to the semifinals.

Muir will play a struggling Hoover next week before taking on another struggling team in Glendale. Then, it’s the Turkey Tussle against Pasadena.
