Central Fire District to hold open house

The Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County is inviting the public to its open house 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 28 at Station No. 5, 6934 Soquel Drive, Aptos.

Bring your family and friends for a day of fun, learning, and community. Meet your Central Fire District firefighters, as well as representatives from American Red Cross, the Capitola Police Department, the Santa Cruz FireSafe Council, American Medical Response State Parks (including lifeguards), Monterey Search Dogs Santa Cruz County CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams), and more.

The open house will have lots of fun activities for all ages, live demonstrations, food trucks, and a wealth of educational information for you and your families.

Trinity Presbyterian to hold annual Service Worship

Trinity Presbyterian Church, 420 Melrose Ave., Santa Cruz, is pleased to welcome B40 neighbors and all to join its annual Service Worship at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 8 and meet new pastor, the Rev. Diane Ford. Service projects this year include neighborhood trash cleanup, writing encouraging greeting cards, singing songs of cheer, and cleaning the portable homeless shower trailer. Taco lunch and fellowship on the lawn will follow.

UCSC Haybarn set to host book talk

The UCSC Haybarn will present a book talk by Maisie Ganzler on “You Can’t Market Manure at Lunchtime” from 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Cowell Ranch Hay Barn, 94 Ranch View Road, Santa Cruz.

Join Ganzler as she takes you to pig farms and boardrooms, factories and farmers markets, teaching you not only how to operate more sustainably but also how to get the credit you deserve for doing it. No matter what industry you’re in, Ganzler’s stories from the front lines in the food business will inspire and educate you on what it takes to get sustainability right.

Ganzler will discuss her book and answer questions. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Doors open at 5 p.m., speaking begins at 5:30, with limited seating. Light snacks will be available.

Santa Cruz Works to host Design Tech event

Where is the future of design headed? How are designers and designs changing with the advent of new tools and technologies like AI? Speakers from renowned design firms like Herbst Produkt and Studio Holladay will share their unique perspectives on the latest trends, challenges, ethical implications and innovations in the world of design during the event at 6-8 p.m. Sept. 11 at Kuumbwa Jazz Center, 320 Cedar St., Santa Cruz.

Metro Advisory Committee seeks applicants

The Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District is now accepting applications to fill two vacancies on its Metro Advisory Committee. Applications must be submitted by Sept. 30 to be considered. The Metro Advisory Committee is a citizen forum that serves Metro and addresses issues that members of the public raise with respect to services provided by Metro.

Interfaith group to host ClimateFest event

The Santa Cruz Interfaith Dayenu Circle, a climate action group, is hosting ClimateFest at Resurrection Church, 7600 Soquel Drive, Aptos from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 22.

ClimateFest is expected to be a fun afternoon of interactive experiences to inspire our community to come together in climate action and create visions for a vibrant future. State Sen. John Laird will speak at noon about how our voice can make a difference.

The event will feature food, art, eco-fashion, kids activities, music and spiritual offerings. Attendees will learn how to advocate for climate action, find out the latest on home electrification and electric vehicles, engage in creative and experiential workshops, get tips on plant-based eating and experience a sense of community with many faith traditions. In addition, about 15 climate-action community organizations will be present to share information about how to engage in positive activities that support our environment.

Concertino Strings program upcoming

The Concertino Strings will hold its September program 11:30 a.m. Sept. 18 and 3 p.m. Sept. 21.

The Concertino Strings, a string orchestra with 25 players including piano, harpsichord, or organ as needed, is the orchestra in residence at the Boulder Creek United Methodist Church, 12855 Boulder St., Boulder Creek.

Associate Director Renata Bratt will lead the concert. The featured works will be G.P. Telemann’s suite, Burlesque of Don Quixote, an appropriate choice for a political season; Katie O’Hara LaBrie’s Pachelbel Rhapsody, a fantasy based on the much-loved Pachelbel Canon; plus Pachelbel’s original Gigue, written to be played with the Canon.

Concerts are under an hour long and admission is free. The atmosphere is casual and the church has air conditioning. Donations to the orchestra are gratefully received. Go to www.concertinostrings.com for information.
