BENICIA — Fire crews brought a fire at the Valero Benicia Refinery under control Monday morning after it broke out and left dark black smoke billowing downwind, authorities said.
A message at 10:47 a.m. from the Solano County Emergency Notification System said that safety officials had lifted a shelter-in-place order for residents in the area and that the fire was under control.
Safety officials issued the shelter-in-place at 9:31 a.m.
Contra Costa County health officials called on a hazardous materials team to investigate the impact of the fire on residents in Martinez, because the fire smoke blew downwind, according to the Bay Area Air District. Black smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as Concord.
The refinery is located in the 3400 block of E. 2nd Street.
It was unknown immediately if the fire caused any injuries.
Health officials with Contra Costa County said they were aware of the incident and were sending a HazMat team to Martinez to monitor for any potential impacts. That city already endured a fire at the Martinez Reining Company in February that released 7,000 gallons of hydrocarbon materials into the air and required medical treatment for six workers.
The future of the 900-acre property that houses the Benicia refinery is murky after Valero Energy Corp. announced its subsidiary, Valero Refining Company-California, has notified the state Energy Commission of its “intent to idle, restructure, or cease refining operations” at the refinery.
