MONTEREY >> Harbor High senior Kaden Dunton, the 2024 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion, advanced from the Central Coast Section Regional Championships at Laguna Seca Golf Ranch on Tuesday.
Dunten shot 2-over-par 73 in the afternoon regional to advance to the CCS Championships at Laguna Seca on May 18. The cut line was 75.
“After coming off a solid season with the best scoring average in the SCCAL, Kaden wanted to prove himself in CCS,” Pirates coach Tim Boucher said. “All day he was hitting solid shots from tee to green. When he realized how tight the leaderboard was, he fired back-to-back birdies on his 14th and 15th holes to help secure a spot in the second round. His game is more than ready to take on the field during round two at CCS.”Stevenson senior Luke Brandler, the defending CCS champion and a Princeton University commit, shot a 3-under 68 for medalist honors. Archbishop Mitty’s Pranit Gupta (69) took second, Gunn’s Alexander Thu (70) took third, and Evergreen Valley’s Andrew Hu (72) was fourth.
Two regionals were held Tuesday. The top four teams and top nine individuals in each regional advanced to next week’s championships.
Stevenson (362), Gunn (380), Los Altos (387), and Junipero Serra (387) advanced from the second regional, played in the afternoon. SCCAL runner-up Aptos (446) took 11th.
St. Ignatius (367), Bellarmine (371), Palo Alto (375) and Carmel (378) advanced from the first regional, played in the morning. SCCAL team champion San Lorenzo Valley (425) took 11th.
Carmel senior Jonathan Chen, who is committed to Dominican University, shot 68 for medalist honors in the first regional. He was followed by five players at 70, Bellarmine’s Grant Curtiss, St. Ignatius’ Daniel Doan, Monta Vista’s Ethan Lien, Crystal Springs Uplands’ Arden Xu, and Harker’s Justin Hu.
San Lorenzo Valley senior James Dahlen, crowned the SCCAL individual champion at Pasatiempo Golf Club last week, shot 76 and missed the cut by four strokes.
“It was a fun time,” Dahlen said. “I wanted to play better but it just didn’t happen. I hit the ball well but didn’t make any birdies. I had five bogeys and the rest were pars, so a pretty boring round. If I could’ve me three birdies it would’ve been a good round.”
The cut line last year was 76. With minimal wind and good greens, the top players in the morning session took advantage.
“It’s a bummer it’s over. It was a good run,” Dahlen said.
Senior Keenan Buntz (85), sophomore Garret Dahlen (85), junior Tanner Brewer (89), and senior Luke Fontinell (90) also scored for the Cougars. Sophomore teammate Lochlin Bischofberger (107) also competed for SLV.
SLV was the class of the SCCAL the past two seasons. The Cougars went 19-1 over the past two seasons, including 10-0 this year. Both championship banners will be hung at the pro shop at Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club.
“I’m proud of the boys,” Cougars head coach James Dahlen said. “It was their last hurrah together. It really has been an incredible two years. To go 19-1 the last two years and 10-0 this year validated that last year was not an anomaly.”
Sophomore Nick Bjorn (84), and seniors Ben Nowark (84), Leland Blankenship (86), Colby Culbertson (96), and William Bartch (96) scored for Aptos. Senior Will Byers (119) also competed for the Mariners.
Monte Vista Christian freshman Thomas Daniels (77) missed the cut by two strokes.
Soquel sophomore Peter Robeloth shot 97.
