Julien Pally and Leo Sapunor paced Santa Cruz High’s boys volleyball team on offense, and the No. 1 seed Cardinals beat No. 4 Mount Madonna 25-20, 25-13, 25-11 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Tournament semifinals at Santa Cruz High on Tuesday.

Mount Madonna hung with Santa Cruz in the first set, but the Cardinals (30-3 overall) pulled away in the second and third behind tough serving and powerful hitting.

Cardinals coach Peter Edwards said Matty Rayray had a great offensive showing off the bench in the second and third sets.

Nikowa D’Costa-Hemp had nine kills and four digs for the Hawks (10-10). David Monclus added seven kills.

Santa Cruz (30-3) faces No. 4 Harbor (26-5) in the tournament championship at Cabrillo College on Friday on 6:30 p.m.

Harbor 3, Soquel 2 >> Junior right side Cooper Lastition made 21 kills and 19 digs, and the No. 2 Pirates scraped by the No. 3 Knights 25-25, 22-25, 25-13, 20-25, 15-13 in the SCCAL Tournament semifinals at Santa Cruz High on Tuesday.

Sophomore setter Eddie Weaver made 51 assists and 15 digs for the Pirates. Senior outside Noah Luksich had 19 kills, eight digs, and four blocks, and junior outside Josh Rejfir had 11 kills and 12 digs. Senior libero Abe Schmidt had 19 digs and six assists.

Outside hitter Nathan McCarthy, who is committed to Cal Lutheran University, made 20 kills and 14 digs for the Knights. Francisco Rothman-Salado had 14 kills and 15 digs. Setter Dominic Garcia made 28 assists, seven kills, and nine digs. Isaac Koontz had five kills and 18 digs, and Keoni Raatior had 19 digs.

The Pirates (26-5) face No. 1 Santa Cruz (30-3) in the tournament championship at Cabrillo College on Friday on 6:30 p.m.

Girls lacrosse

Stevenson 11, at Scotts Valley 6 >> The second-place Falcons lost to the champion Pirates in their Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division finale Tuesday.

Sofia Niklaus had four goals and one assist for the Falcons. Skylar Dufour had one goal and one assist, Erin Szymanski added a goal, and Dillon Fiorita had an assist.

Goalie Lili Raif made five saves for the Falcons who play at PCAL Mission Division champ Aptos in a Central Coast Section play-in game on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

High school baseball

At Soquel 2, Scotts Valley 1 >> The Knights, ranked No. 6 in the CCS by maxpreps.com, were pushed to the limit by MLB Draft prospect Kaleb Wing and the No. 42 Falcons in their SCCAL win Tuesday.

Noah Piona doubled and had two RBI for Soquel (21-1, 10-1) in the first inning. It was the Knights’ lone hit. Cash Moran and Gabe Virgallito scored.

Bryce McDonnell had three hits and scored the Falcons’ lone run in the second inning. Isaac Martin had a hit and one RBI.

Winning pitcher Jake Escalante gave up five hits, one walk, and one unearned run over four innings. He struck out four batters. Dylan Hull pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the save.

Wing pitched five innings and gave up one hit, two walks, and two runs in a losing effort. The flame thrower struck out nine batters.

Soquel plays at Scotts Valley (10-13, 6-6) on Friday at 4 p.m.

At Harbor 2, Aptos 1 >> Jaxson Hoye pitched brilliantly over seven innings, and, on offense, he drove in both runs in the Pirates’ walk-off win in SCCAL play Tuesday.

Max Falconer scored the tying run and Joey Raffo doubled and scored the winning run. Damien Espinoza took the loss.

Hoye struck out six batters, walked one and gave up four hits.

Samuel Garcia tripled and scored a run for the Mariners, who led 1-0 in the fourth inning. Espinoza had one RBI.

Harbor (15-9, 6-6) plays at Aptos (8-13, 4-7) on Friday at 4 p.m.

Santa Cruz 11, at SLV 2 >> Cam Fusari doubled and had five RBI in the Cardinals’ SCCAL win Tuesday.

Damos Deworken doubled, had three RBI, and scored a run for the second-place Cardinals (12-11, 9-3). Fernando DaCosta drew three walks, had one RBI, and scored twice. Seth Jin had a hit, one walk, one RBI, and scored twice. Jesse Parisi drew a walk and scored three runs. August Swanson had a hit, one walk, and scored twice.

Jaden Shabry and Brody Egner each had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for the Cougars (3-19, 0-12). Shabry also scored two runs. Jordan Renteria had two hits.

Izzy Wormhaudt pitched four innings and earned the win.

SLV plays at Everett Alvarez (8-13) in nonleague action on Thursday at 4 p.m.

The Cardinals host SLV on Friday at 4 p.m.

At Watsonville 3, King City 1 >> Senior Patrick Miller-Brown counted a solo home run among his three hits in the unbeaten Wildcatz’s PCAL Cypress Division win Tuesday. He has all of his team’s three home runs this season.

Francisco Rodriquez-Bermundez and Brody Barto each had a hit and one RBI for the Wildcatz (11-11, 9-0). Mathew Silva had a hit and scored a run, and Kaden Ortiz stole two bases and also scored.

Mateo Blair singled and scored the lone run for the Mustangs (6-15, 6-3) in the sixth inning.

Rudy Valdez earned the complete-game win with a season-high 13 strikeouts. Valdez has struck out 81 batters over 43 2/3 innings this season. He gave up four hits, four walks, and an unearned run.

Sebastian Lizardi gave up two runs, one earned, over three innings and took the loss.

The Wildcatz, who have three games left in the regular season, play at King City on Thursday at 4 p.m. Watsonville still has two games remaining against North Salinas (16-5, 9-0).

Pajaro Valley 14, at Seaside 3; 5 inn. >> Brandon Perez-Moreno had two doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored in the Grizzlies’ PCAL Cypress Division win on Tuesday.

Alex Acosta had two hits, two stolen bases, and scored twice for the Grizzlies. Steve Martinez had a hit and scored twice, JC DeLuna had hit, two stolen bases, and scored twice, and Roy Sanchez had two hits and scored one run

Pajaro Valley (3-12, 2-8) hosts Seaside (0-12, 0-7) at Watsonville High on Thursday at 5 p.m.

At Hollister 8, St. Francis 7 >> Nick Fantl had two hits, three RBI, and a run scored in the Sharks’ narrow PCAL Gabilan Division loss Tuesday.

Evan Dyer had a hit and two RBI for the Sharks (11-12, 7-8). Noah Magana and Dononvan Dominguez each had a hit and scored twice. Jacob Fonseca had two hits and one RBI.

Trent Roach, Gavin Rodriguez, and Jordy Quezada homered for the Haybalers (16-8, 10-6).

Ami Lopez earned the win in relief, and reliever Mason Borrego took the loss.

The Sharks, who have four games left in the regular season, host Salinas (8-14, 4-12) on Thursday at 4 p.m.

High school softball

Soquel 9, at Santa Cruz 5 >> Emma Niizawa had four hits, two stolen bases, two RBI, and two run scored in the Knights’ SCCAL win Tuesday.

Eliza Stevens had a walk, one RBI, and scored twice for the Knights (4-9, 3-9). Kylie South had a hit and one RBI. Ellie Howell had a hit and scored a run. Katie Niizawa, Evelyn Eslit-McDow, Mia Riddle, and Kami Montanez also scored.

Tezdyn Medina-Mates had two hits, one RBI, and scored four runs for the Cardinals (7-13, 5-6). Ellia Dunton had two hits, with a triple, one walk, and two RBI. Molly Pisciotta had three hits, including a triple, and scored a run.

On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Soquel hosts Aptos, while Santa Cruz hosts Scotts Valley.

At SLV 11, Aptos 9 >> The Cougars topped the Mariners in the teams’ SCCAL slugfest Tuesday.

On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Aptos plays at Soquel, while SLV hosts Harbor.

At MVC 10, Rancho San Juan 7; 8 inn. >> Freshman Addie Boles hit a walk-off, three-run home run, her second homer of the game, to give the Mustangs the win in PCAL Mission Division thriller on Tuesday.

Boles finished with five hits, three for extra bases, seven RBI, and scored twice for the Mustangs (11-13, 4-10).

Senior Kayla Fullalove-Silveira had three hits — two doubles and a home run, her fourth straight game with a round-tripper — two RBI and three runs scored. She has a CCS leading 10 home runs this season, and has 22 in her three-year Mustangs career.

MVC sophomore Ava Alvarado had one hit, two stolen bases, and scored three runs, and Samantha Bertoldi had two hits, including a double, and scored twice.

Aysiah Lamb had three hits, two RBI, and scored twice for the Trail Blazers (5-10, 4-9).

Sophomore pitcher Gianna Johnson earned the complete-game win.

MVC plays at division leading Pacific Grove (14-6, 12-1) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

U.S. Open Local Qualifying >> Santa Cruz’s Matthew Bass missed the cut at 2025 U.S. Open Local Qualifying at The Club at Ruby Hill in Pleasanton on Monday. He shot 14-over-par 86.

Five golfers advanced from the site to Final Qualifying: San Francisco medalist Angelo Marcon (63), San Mateo’s Mason Browning (67), Morgan Hill’s Chelso Barrett (67), Tiburon’s JP Odland (68), and Downey’s Matthew Robles (68).
