Ball-hawking safety Ashtyn Davis, a Santa Cruz High and Cal alum, agreed to a free-agent contract with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday after spending the past five seasons with the AFC East rival New York Jets.

SI.com reported the deal to be worth $2.5 million with incentives that can push it to $3 million.

The Dolphins had a need to fill the position after four-year veteran Jevon Holland agreed to a three-year, $45 million deal with the New York Giants earlier Wednesday, and 12-year veteran Jordan Poyer is an impending unrestricted free agent.

Miami also inked former Detroit Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, 25, to a one-year, $4 million deal, ESPN.com reported. The two newcomers join Elijah Campbell, 29, and Patrick McMorris, 23, in the Dolphins’ safety room.

There was heavy speculation that Davis, 28, would return to the Bay Area and play for San Francisco after the 49ers named Robert Saleh their defensive coordinator on Jan. 24. Saleh served as the Jets’ head coach from 2021-24.

Davis was selected by the Jets in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Davis played in 59 games for New York and made 22 starts. He has made 175 total tackles, 15 pass breakups, eight interceptions, four forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries in his career. Five of his interceptions have come over the past two seasons. He played in 15 games in 2024, including one start, and made 35 combined tackles and two interceptions over 261 snaps. Both of his interceptions came against Miami in the teams’ regular-season finale, which the Jets won 32-20.
