SAN JOSE >> Defenseman Vincent Desharnais is questionable to play tonight when the San Jose Sharks face the New York Rangers in the first game of a back-to-back situation.
Desharnais is dealing with an upper-body injury he played through in the Sharks’ 6-5 shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. Desharnais had 13:18 in ice time, well below his average since joining the Sharks earlier this month, and was credited with three blocked shots and one hit.
“Got to give him a lot of credit,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said of Desharnais. “He’s playing through a pretty tough injury, so we’ll see.”
Desharnais was one of four Sharks players who didn’t practice Friday as the team held its skate at SAP Center as part of an event for elevated season ticket holders. Defenseman Mario Ferraro and forwards Barclay Goodrow and Tyler Toffoli also did not skate but are expected to play against the Rangers.
The stay-at-home Desharnais has averaged over 17 minutes in ice time per game since he came to the Sharks on March 5 in a trade with the Penguins. Recently, the 6-foot-7 Desharnais has been paired with the 5-9 Luca Cagnoni, who has played in three NHL games.
It was not immediately clear who would take Desharnais’ spot in the lineup if he could not play tonight.
Injured defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Jan Rutta skated apart from the group on Friday. While Rutta remains a little further away from returning, Warsofsky said Vlasic might be an option to play this weekend, either tonight at home or Sunday in Los Angeles against the Kings.
Vlasic (upper body) has missed the last three games and hasn’t played since March 15. Rutta (lower body) has not played since Jan. 23.
Warsofsky reiterated Friday that the Sharks are confident Rutta can return before the end of the season. San Jose’s last game is on April 16 at home against the Oilers.
Vet closes in on milestone >> Forward Tyler Toffoli scored his team-leading 26th and 27th goals of the season on Thursday.
Toffoli’s second goal gave the Sharks a 5-3 lead at the 3:02 mark of the third period, a lead San Jose did a fine job protecting until the final minute of regulation time. Then the Sharks allowed last-minute goals to the Maple Leafs, as Toronto scored twice after pulling goalie Joseph Woll for the extra attacker.
The Sharks still eked out a 6-5 win thanks to Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini’s scores in the shootout.
Toffoli scored, and Wennberg had two assists, in the Sharks’ 3-2 shootout win over the Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on March 3. But since that game, Toffoli had only had two empty-net goals, one against the Buffalo Sabres on March 4 and one against the Chicago Blackhawks on March 13.
In that eight-game stretch of not scoring on a manned net, Toffoli had 30 shots, lowering his shooting percentage on the season to 12.7, slightly lower than the 14.4% he had last year in a combined 79 games with the New Jersey Devils and Winnipeg Jets.
Still, Toffoli, now in his 13th NHL campaign, has 94 goals since the start of the 2022-23 season. Only 29 players across the league have scored more goals in that same time.
“There’s been some ups and downs,” Toffoli said. “I wasn’t necessarily stressed, but I didn’t score a goal with a goalie in the net for a bunch of games there, so obviously that was nice. But personally, yeah, 30 goals is obviously really cool. I could have had a little bit more, had a couple of little slumps there early in the season as well. But just trying to play the best I can, and lead by example.
“I think everybody in the locker room right now is really buying in.”
