A shooting investigation on Interstate 94 in St. Clair Shores on Saturday afternoon closed the eastbound side of the freeway near 10 Mile Road for several hours.
According to city officers, Michigan State Police is handling the investigation.
At approximately 12:55 p.m., St. Clair Shores officers responded to the area of I-94 and 10 Mile Road in response to multiple 911 calls reporting multiple shots fired on the freeway.
They located a vehicle on the side of the freeway with two victims of gunshot wounds inside. They called for assistance from St. Clair Shores Fire Department emergency personnel.
One 19-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds to the back and leg was a priority one transport to Henry Ford St. John in Detroit. An 18-year-old male who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the arm and back was also a priority one transport to the same hospital.
A statement from MSP said their preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a black Chevrolet Malibu and a silver vehicle were shooting at each other while driving on the freeway. The driver of the Malibu rear ended a GMC Acadia and the driver of the silver vehicle continued driving east.
“Detectives are currently working to find the motive of this shooting and the relationship between the two vehicles,” said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw. “This is a very large scene and the freeway will be closed for quite sometime.”
Shaw said the crime scene covered a one-mile stretch on the freeway.
After the Malibu rear-ended the Acadia, both drivers pulled over to the right shoulder.
According to the MSP statement, one of the Malibu passengers carried a pistol up the embankment, threw it, then returned to the vehicle.
Police recovered that firearm, a 9 mm Glock with a switch.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 855-MICHTIP or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAKUP.
