




It’s the time of year when desserts made with fresh fruits and berries hit the shelves at pie shops.
Fresh strawberry pies are the easiest to find, but peaches and blackberries are also making an appearance.
Strawberries are harvested throughout the year in California, but peak season starts in spring and runs into the fall, according to the California Strawberry Commission’s website.
Peaches and berries have shorter harvests and usually aren’t available as long. When they show up depends on the growers and the weather.
Polly’s Pies is serving fresh strawberry pie at about $6.49 a slice and $22.99 for whole pies.
The Orange County-based casual chain is also offering a cream cheese strawberry lemonade pie topped with fresh strawberries for $21.99, and its Banberry Pie with banana cream filling topped with strawberries for $19.99.
Seasonal specials include Banberry shortcake, which is banana bread topped with strawberries for $5.29 a slice.
Malihini Pie is featured on a Hawaiian-themed, limited-time menu. It’s made with fresh pineapple topping on a banana cream base, according to the chain’s website. It costs $5.29 a slice and $18.99 for a whole pie. This is also a Malihini Pancakes breakfast for $13.99. pollyspies.com
Marie Callender’s is known for its strawberry pies, which go for about $22.99. It also sells its strawberry glaze by the pint. Fresh berry pie, made with blackberries, costs about $24.99. mariecallenders.com
Coco’s Bakery doesn’t have strawberry pies at restaurants we checked. But the chain rolled out its “Peach Season” menu June 13. Whole fresh peach pies sell for around $24.99, and slices cost $5.99. Peach cheese pies go for same prices. Peach shakes cost $8.99.

Norms Restaurants’ summer menu includes a tres leches cake topped with sliced strawberries for $3.99 a slice. norms.com
Porto’s Bakery makes tarts with sponge cake, vanilla custard, strawberries and blueberries, mangoes and other seasonal fruits. They serve 10-12 people and cost around $33.95. Single-serve strawberry pistachio tartlets and fresh fruit tartlets with vanilla custard cost about $4.55. Finally, Donut Man in Glendora and downtown Los Angeles has strawberry-filled doughnuts for $6.50.
The shops spoon fresh, glazed strawberries into sliced doughnuts rather than piping in filling. Strawberry doughnuts are available off and on throughout the year, and the shops also sell peach doughnuts when the fruit is in season. thedonutmanca.com
