SUNNYVALE >> A woman was hit and killed by a recreational vehicle over the weekend in Sunnyvale, according to authorities.

The fatal collision happened about 4:50 p.m. in the 900 block of West Cardinal Avenue, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said in a news release. Officers and firefighters arrived to find the woman trapped under the vehicle.

Firefighters extricated the woman and took her to Stanford Health Care, where she was pronounced dead.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office identified the woman Tuesday as Jean Peterson, 86. She did not have a listed city of residence.

Authorities determined the woman was helping level the RV on blocks in the driveway of a home when the collision happened. The RV driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The investigation into the collision is continuing, but authorities said intoxication and speed did not appear to play a role.
