Police arrested two men in Colorado and Nevada this week after investigators say they struck up an online relationship with a 14-year-old Aurora girl, lured her from her home and took her to Las Vegas in what may have been a human trafficking operation.

Christian Tyler Williamson, 26, was arrested in Kremmling on suspicion of internet sexual exploitation of a child and internet luring of a child, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Cameron Miles Scruggs, 25, was arrested in Las Vegas on suspicion of kidnapping in Colorado and statutory sexual seduction by a person 21 or older in Nevada.

The girl, whom The Denver Post is no longer identifying publicly, was reported missing June 16 after she disappeared from her southeast Aurora home the day before, Aurora police Cmdr. Marc Paolino said at a briefing Thursday.

Detectives later determined that Williamson drove to her house, picked her up and took her to a Lakewood hotel before handing her off to Scruggs and a yet-unidentified woman, who drove her to Las Vegas, Paolino said.

Police combed through social media and began releasing public alerts about her disappearance before the girl’s parents found her journal on Saturday, which showed a detailed plan to run away that had been concocted between the girl, Scruggs and Williamson.

Investigators believe the teen had been talking with Scruggs and Williamson for several months on social networking and social media sites including Reddit and Discord, Paolino said.

Through the journal and social media, federal and local investigators identified Williamson as a suspect in the case and arrested him at his Kremmling home Wednesday. He told police the girl was in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas police and the FBI arrested Scruggs as he was arriving at his apartment Wednesday, and the girl was found safe inside.

“We can’t lose sight that this was a frightening and traumatic incident for the victim and everyone who knew her,” Paolino said. “Parents really need to be involved in all levels of their kids’ lives, including knowing what they’re doing online and with their electronic devices.”

It doesn’t appear that the men used one specific social media site that parents should be leery of, Aurora police Lt. Seth Robertson said.

“This could very well be part of a bigger human trafficking case, and these social media sites is where they all happen,” he said.

The girl is still with human services workers in Las Vegas, and Aurora police are coordinating her reunion with her family, Paolino said. He declined to release further information about her condition because of privacy concerns.

Additional charges are possible against Williamson and Scruggs, as well as the unidentified woman who investigators believe traveled to Colorado with Scruggs.

Williamson is being held without bail at the Grand County jail, and Scruggs is in custody at the Clark County, Nev., jail, court records show.
