Several streets in Griffith will have limited or prohibited parking after the Town Council revamped several ordinances.

The council, at its Tuesday meeting, voted to enact an ordinance that bans parking in some places and limits parking in others. Parking instruction signs will be posted in areas around the town’s schools, and the town will be able to declare 20-minute parking spots in the downtown and other commercial spaces in town as needed, the ordinance reads.

Parking will be prohibited at all times, meanwhile, in the fire lanes on the following streets, according to the ordinance:

On the east side of Arbogast Avenue from 40th Avenue to Ridge Road;

On the east side of Broad Street from Main Street at the property line of the 100 block of Broad;

From the 800 block of North Wheeler Avenue to the East 45th Avenue intersection south of the Griffith-Calumet Township Library branch;

On the west side of Elmer Avenue south of Crestview Apartments to Ash Avenue; and

On West Main Street from the north side of Broad Street to the east side of the bike trail, and the south side between Cline Avenue and Broad Street.

The council also amended an ordinance that allows residents to water their lawns, gardens and other “summertime activities” without penalty. Sewage usage fee for single-family residences will be based on monthly average water usage during November, December, January and February if the water usage is lower than the summer usage and the property owner has remained the same, according to the ordinance. There’s also a $40 maximum summer credit for any one billing period, the ordinance said.
