Josh Allen had three of his four TDs in the second half and the Bills overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat the Cardinals 34-28 on Sunday in Orchard Park, New York.
Greg Rousseau had three sacks, including one that forced a fumble. The defense preserved the Bills’ win when Damar Hamlin and Ja’Marcus Ingram broke up Kyler Murray’s pass attempt near the goal line on fourth-and-7 from the Bills’ 29 with 26 seconds left.
This was a thrilling back-and-forth affair between two nonconference rivals on a blustery day with temperatures in the low 60s and heavy winds gusting up to 30 mph.
The outing featured the first kickoff return for a touchdown under the NFL’s new rules. DeeJay Dallas fielded the ball at his own 4, worked his way up the middle through a barrage of Bills before finding a lane up the left side with 8:31 remaining in cutting the host’s lead to 31-28.
Dallas’ score came after the Bills appeared to put the game away when Allen scampered in from 6 yards and hurdled Budda Baker before being hit and tumbling into the end zone.
Allen finished the game with his left, non-throwing hand, heavily wrapped, and managed to march the Bills 22 yards to set up Tyler Bass hitting a 39-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining.
Texans 29, Colts 27: Stefon Diggs caught two TD passes and Joe Mixon rushed for 159 yards and another score to help the Texans close out the road win. The Colts extended the NFL’s longest active opening day winless streak to 11.
Bears 24, Titans 17: No. 1 overall draft pick Caleb Williams was just 14 of 29 for 93 yards with a 55.7 passer rating but the Bears defense bailed the QB out in the victort at home. Tyrique Stevenson returned an INT 43 yards for the go-ahead TD to give the Bears, who trailed 17-0 in the first half.
Patriots 16, Bengals 10: Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 120 yards and a score, Joey Slye kicked three FGs and the visiting Patriots won former player Jerod Mayo’s debut as coach.
Saints 47, Panthers 10: Derek Carr passed for three TDs and the host Saints scored on their first nine possessions to power the blowout. Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams each ran for scores and Blake Grupe kicked four FGs.
Dolphins 20, Jaguars 17: Jason Sanders nailed a 52-yard FG as time expired, and the Dolphins rallied to win their fourth straight season opener. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 336 yards and a TDi n the victory. Tyreek Hill had seven catches for 130 yards, including an 80-yard score.
Steelers 18, Falcons 10: Justin Fields stepped in to lead the Steelers to the road win with Russell Wilson’s debut put on hold by an injury. Chris Boswell booted six FGs, three longer than 50 yards, and the Steelers defense picked off Kirk Cousins twice.
Vikings 28, Giants 6: Sam Darnold threw two TDs in a highly-efficient performance and LB Andrew Van Ginkel scored on a spectacular 10-yard INT return to lead the visiting Vikings.
