A child killed in a hit-and-run crash in Gardena on Sunday morning was identified as 5-year-old Patrick Mateo Chacon, who was crossing a street with his grandmother when both were hit by a driver, authorities said on Monday.

A suspect was still on the loose, Gardena Lt. Chris Cuff said.

A driver leaving the scene after hitting someone is a crime, no matter who was at fault, Cuff said.

The boy and his grandmother were in a crosswalk at Marine and Budlong avenues when they were hit by driver who was making a left turn from eastbound Marine to northbound Budlong, Cuff said.

Whether the victims were attempting to cross Marine or Budlong was not known.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, while the grandmother was taken to a hospital for treatment, Cuff said. Her condition was not known.

The lieutenant said detectives believe the vehicle was a dark-colored, mid-sized SUV and that police believe speed was not a factor in the collision.

A memorial shrine at the intersection was growing, with candles, teddy bears, balloons and flowers placed for the victims.
