LAKEWOOD >> Former Niwot thrower Lamar West remembers just how upset he was to miss his high school graduation 19 years ago.

Back in 2006, he recalled being stuck at the state track and field meet for his final event of the weekend, the discus. On one particular attempt, he believes those raw emotions of disgust allowed him to muster up something a little extra, resulting in a toss of 146 feet and 3 inches, which still remains the school record.

At the meet Saturday, he used some white-painted lines on a patch of grass at Jefferson County Stadium to mimic how it soared out of the designated landing area before curling back in. What he didn’t know two decades earlier — but is well certain of now — is that his true legacy in the sport is his daughter.

The dominance of seniors Jade West and Reese Kasper, and junior Addy Ritzenhein, helped lead the Cougars to their sixth straight Class 4A girls track and field title. The boys, meanwhile, won for the first time since 2021, thanks in part to three golds from junior Rocco Culpepper.

West three-peated in the shot put Saturday, two days after winning her second straight in discus. Atop the podium on the final day, she looked over to sophomore teammate Mahlya Blanks, who was runner-up in shot put, and smiled.

“Something about state is so different,” the University of Wyoming commit, West, said. “And the fact we were able to do it together means so much more.”

And they had company.Kasper repeated in the 300-meter hurdles and 4×200 to go along with her win in the 100 hurdles, giving the Kansas State commit six state wins over the past two seasons. Ritzenhein won the 3,200, the 1,600 and 4×800 for a second straight year, leaving her with seven track titles and two cross country golds ahead of her senior season.

“Just seeing my teammates do so well, it gives me energy to feed off and use in my own races,” Ritzenhein said after winning the two-mile Saturday. “And honestly I think that’s why I do well in cross country, knowing I’m running for more than myself.”

The Niwot girls just about doubled up second-place Windsor in the 4A standings, 148 points to 79.5. The boys, led by Culpepper’s repeat wins in the 1,600 and 800, beat the field by 42 points, ending with 98.

In the boys’ final event of the meet, the 4A 4×400, the wind picked up and it began to rain. But it didn’t matter much for the winning relay — fittingly, from Niwot.

After the Cougars dodged another team’s fallen runner during an early handoff in the race, senior Joshua Archuleta rallied past Thompson Valley’s anchor over the final 150 meters to win the program’s 14th event of the three-day meet.

“When I see him in front of me, he’s not beating me,” Archuleta said of his finish. “That’s just in my mind on repeat. I’m winning this.”

And with that, Niwot’s track and field dominance continues.
