Santa Cruz’s Raymond Valadez Ingersoll took first out of 541 runners in the Santa Cruz Westside Half Marathon on Saturday.

The former UC Santa Cruz cross country runner finished the 13.1-mile race in 1 hour, 13 minutes, 52 seconds. Santa Cruz’s Michael Charbonneau (1:19:18) took second, and Mountain View’s Eric Biggers (1:24:08) was third.

Avery Louis of Cable, Wisconsin, was the top woman in 1:26:18. Gilroy’s Erika Lopez (1:31:18) took second, and Walnut Creek’s Sarah Cook (1:33:12) was third.

Spring Valley’s Steven Valadez (32:17) took first out of 336 runners in the 10k race and was followed across the finish line by Kyle Jewer (35:35) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Hollister’s Tyler Ham (37:33).

Seaside’s Dani Springfels (37:45) was the top female. Mountain View’s Rebecca Benton (41:27) took second, and Santa Clara’s Amor Ai (41:28) was third.

Rodrigo Patarroyo (17:21) of Bogotá, Colombia, took first out of 158 runners in the 5k race. Evan Hofstetter (17:32) of Flagstaff, Arizona, took second, and San Francisco’s Matthew Padua (18:20) was third.

Clovis’ Acacia Kuhtz (24:55) was the top woman. Aaliyah Eerkes (25:51) of Manassas, Virginia, took second, and Gilroy’s Sorayma Perez (26:13) was third.

Boys cross country

Crystal Springs Invitational >> Santa Cruz senior Eli Fitchen-Young (14:43.0) took second out of 95 runners in the 2.95-mile Championship race at the Crystal Springs Invitational in Belmont on Saturday.

De La Salle senior Trey Caldwell won in 14:27.0. Aptos sophomore Sam Hansen (15:45.7) took eighth.

Scotts Valley junior Aaron Weiss (16:13.4; 21st), Aptos sophomore Anthony Sandford-Carroll (16:14.8; 23rd) and Mariners senior Vincent Sandford-Carroll (16:22.7; 25th) posted top-25 finishes.

De La Salle (48) won the team title. Aptos (119) took fourth, Santa Cruz (208) took eighth), and Scotts Valley (310) took 12th.

Kirby junior Mason Vergho (18:31.7) took 102nd out of 182 runners in the varsity race to lead the Griffins (709) to 25th place. Granada (88) won the team title.

Girls cross country

Crystal Springs Invitational >> Aptos junior Maya Schiro (18:53.4) took fourth and Santa Cruz freshman Isla Roake (18:57.7) was fifth in the 2.95-mile Championship race at the Crystal Springs Invitational in Belmont on Saturday.

Santa Cruz senior Amelia Palm (20:22.4; 21st) and Scotts Valley senior Violet McCutchen (20:37.9; 25th) also posted top-25 finishes.

Sophomore Sade Bumpus (18:12.0) took first for Granada, the team champion with a score of 40. 4. Santa Cruz (105) took fourth.

Pacific Collegiate freshman Siobhan Walls (24:25.7) took 86th out of 129 runners in the varsity race.

College football

At Coalinga 56, Cabrillo 14 >> The Seahawks lost their Golden Coast Conference road game on Saturday.

Cabrillo (0-4, 0-1) hosts Gavilan (2-4, 1-1) on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Boys water polo

Harbor Invitational >> Harbor placed third place at the Harbor Invitational on Saturday.

The Pirates won two of their three games. They beat Carlmont 7-6 on Friday, lost 13-8 to Palo Alto on Saturday morning, and beat Salinas 9-8 in the afternoon.

Seven Pirates produced goals: Seniors Jameson Venus, Elias Keen Server, and Logan Manildi, juniors Kai Henrikson, Casper Mills, and Ty Houghton, and sophomore Noah Pinkerton.

Goalies Aidan O’Neil and Sawyer Onorato shared time in the goal.

Harbor plays at Soquel on Tuesday.

Girls volleyball

Harbor Tournament: Harbor went 0-2 on the final day of the Harbor Tournament on Saturday.

The Pirates lost to Folsom 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16 and Buchanon 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23.

Senior outside hitter Maren O’Farrell totaled 23 kills and 22 digs, and senior setter Sandy Enriquez made 31 assists. Senior outside hitter Isla Johnson had 12 kills against Folsom and sophomore middle blocker Cecile Novembre had 11 kills against Buchanon.

Harbor (16-9, 9-0 SCCAL) hosts Scotts Valley on Thursday at 6:30 pm.

Women’s soccer

At UC Santa Cruz 6, Simpson 1 >> Sydney Boyd had a goal and two assists in the Banana Slugs’ win Saturday.

Amanda Scott, Camille Anneet, Tiana Stouch, Kathleen Byambasuren, and Erin Freeman also scored for UCSC, which outshot its opponent 15-3.

Simpson made five saves. Ainsley Gove made one save for UCSC over 79 minutes. She split time with Tyler Beaman, who didn’t face a shot on goal.

UCSC (7-2-5) plays at Dominican (4-5-1) in San Rafael on Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.

Women’s volleyball

C2C Invitational >> UCSC went 1-1 on the opening day of the C2C Invitational in Mary Washington, Virginia, on Saturday.

The Banana Slugs lost to Salisbury 25-16, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 and beat Christopher Newport 26-24, 25-15, 18-25, 25-16.

Ashley Magley had 15 kills in UCSC’s win. Kelly Ann Greene had nine kills. Margo Melgoza had 26 assists and five aces. Kate Lau made 20 digs and Anna Hospodar had 18 digs.

Greene had 15 kills and UCSC’s loss, and Magley had 13. Melgoza had 29 assists and 16 digs.

UCSC plays Christopher Newport and Mary Washington on Sunday.

Men’s water polo

Bruce Watson Invitational >> Cabrillo went 0-2 at the Bruce Watson Invitational at West Valley College on Saturday. The Seahawks lost 15-11 to Santa Rosa and 16-9 to Sierra.

Aiden Howard and Nolan Nguyen each scored five goals on the day. Brandon Smith scored four goals, Josh Retzlaff scored three, Joe Brennan scored twice, and Ayden Reed added a goal.

Goalie Ben Duarte made 11 total saves.

Seahawks coach Jasper Billings said the Seahawks played their best game of the season Sierra, ranked No. 3.

“We kept it to a two-goal game through through most of the third quarter,” he said. “And we did that without our top scorer, who was out due to a concussion.”
