Riverside youths got a crash course in designing shirts and apparel from someone who’s an expert on the topic.
The founder of My1of1, a custom apparel company, introduced the sessions that taught students to create their own shirts, from concept to reality.
Ahmon Metdals, a Riverside Unified School District alum, offered the course at eight schools across the district. His company has partnered with giants such as Foot Locker, Converse, Rivian and New Balance.
My1of1’s student program has reached more than 50,000 students across the nation with lessons about design, entrepreneurship and marketing.
But this summer’s classes — made in partnership with the district’s Expanded Learning Program — are extra special.
“Being able to work with the Riverside Unified School District is a full-circle moment for myself,” Metdals said in an email.
Each student left their workshop with three pieces of custom apparel they designed — plus a custom pair of shoes they helped create.
The company will continue working with Earhart Middle School, one of the workshop sites.
My1of1 is installing apparel printing equipment to help students learn “real-world skills through work-based learning,” Metdals said.
